Report: Steven Stamkos Has a Concussion

Quote:

Reports out of the world championship in Germany concerning Steven Stamkos, indicate the Tampa Bay Lightning star may have a concussion.

The Canwest News Service reported on Thursday that Stamkos, hurt Wednesday in Canada's 4-1 loss to Switzerland, will miss Friday's game, and Canada GM Mark Messier said, "I think it's just a protocol that you follow when someone has the symptoms that he had. It's not a blunt blow to the head, that kind of concussion. It's a different kind when you get hit in the jaw."

Stamkos, who tied Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the NHL lead with 51 goals, was hurt in the first period when finishing a check on Timo Helbling. Stamkos' father, Chris, who watched the game from his Unionville, Ontario, home, said Helbling hit his son with an elbow or stick to the jaw. Canada coach Craig MacTavish confirmed later to reporters in Gemany it was an elbow. Stamkos missed 10 minutes of the first period, played the second but sat out the third.

Chris Stamkos on Thursday said he has not spoken to his son, but received a text message saying he would not be playing. Chris said Steven did not disclose his injury.

"All he said was he wasn't playing on Friday," Chris said.

Helbling did not hit Stamkos with an elbow, it was Stamkos that tried to hit Helbling along the boards and got himself and Helbling off balance and actually ran into Helblings elbow. There was no penalty called and the hit seemed like a nothing collision. If Stamkos gets concussions out of something like this he has to pay attention for the rest of his career otherwise he'll get problems.

If he has a concussion from that collision he is going to have a shorter career then Bert Lindros ...

Whose this Bert Lindros guy? I think you might mean Brett? ;)

Who cares if Stamkos has a concussion? He's got all summer to clear the cobwebs.

Well Canada cares for sure, he was one of the important pieces of their team at this WC's, well they have called Jordan Eberle to replace him.

But what worries me more is that if you get concussions out of such harmless collissions you'll have a hard time surviving the NHL for more years. Hopefully it was just bad luck.

Actually I thought Cicarelli gave some great insight into what happened, but that's cool too.

Posts like his (acd1) make it easier to understand why Flyers' fans have a bad rap on this site and in general.

Unfortunate accident it appears. But when will the NHL start protectings its players and their heads? I think the solution is obvious: instead of policing head shots, the NHL needs to bar players from participating in the World Championships. End of concussion problem

Np. I forgot about the playoff series and my avatar...the truth is I'm a Sabres fan but I try to hide it just like every other Sabres fan.
