Report: Oilers, Ryan Smyth discussing contract extension

Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers and pending free agent Ryan Smyth are discussing a contract extension, according to Pierre LeBrun.

Earlier this month, general manager Steve Tambellini told Smyth that he would not be traded before the February 27 deadline, despite interest in the veteran from around the NHL. Smyth also has a no-trade clause.

The 1994 first-round pick has 17 goals and 22 assists in 60 games with the Oilers this season.

Why would they be trying THIS hard to hold onto/re-sign a guy that just turned 36?

Have you watched him play this year?

The first 30 games this year he was unreal.

40 points in 60 games not playing on the top line is actually pretty impressive. He's on pace for about 55 points this year.

This isn't really news... Smyth has already said he's resigning in Edmonton as long as the deal is reasonable.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

Exactly.

Even if he only scores 20 goals next year and 15 the following year, it's the leadership you want. This guy would block a shot with his face to win.

thats exactly what the oil needs, a veteran who loves being on the team. keep him there for a couple more years and benefit from it for a decade as he teaches the young stars what it means to be an oiler and a pro

I hope Ryan Smyth and the Oilers can come to some agreement. He isn't getting any 6 million dollar contract extensions at this stage. But a salary of around 3-3.5M would be fair in my books.
