Report: Belak trying to lure Sundin to Florida

It’s a long shot, but the Panthers might yet be a player in the Mats Sundin Sweepstakes.

According to the Toronto Sun, Panther enforcer Wade Belak, who was acquired from the Maple Leafs at the trade deadline last season, has been lobbying Sundin to consider Florida when he hits the free-agent market on July 1.

Belak, of course, is one reason Sundin might come to Florida. Chad Kilger, another ex-Leaf who has yet to announce his plans for next season but whose rights still belong to the Panthers, might be another. And Sundin is known to enjoy golf and the outdoors, something he couldn’t do in Toronto.

“Both of us know how much Joe Nieuwendyk liked playing down here,” Belak said, “with the beach and stuff.”

Sounds like Florida might be trying to make a brand new Maple Leafs team.

Hell, they had mine as well get Raycroft and Tucker too.

i think it would be cool to see mats sundin in florida. I doubt he will sign there though. I think he wants a cup.

Would Mats Sundin really sign with a bad team like Florida, who is now even worse after losing Jokinen? I doubt it. Florida fans can dream, but I don't see it happening.

I'm pretty sure Sundin will be looking to sign with a contender, but he would be something to fill the void left by Jokinen. Unlikely to happen though.

Yup. Wade Belak being Wade Belak. I'm just glad for his sake that Paul Maurice didn't end up getting the coaching there.
