Red Wings Ink Ty Conklin
DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland announced today that the Red Wings have signed goaltender Ty Conklin to a one-year contract.
Conklin posted a 18-8-5 record with two shutouts, and a 2.51 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. In 109 career regular-season games, Conklin, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, has compiled a 48-32-12 record with a 2.60 GAA and .909 save percentage. Conklin spent parts of three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before splitting the 2006-07 season between Buffalo and Columbus. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 07-01-2008 at 05:25 PM. |

That's young for a Red Wing.

Jimmy Howard is possibly the goaltender of the future for the Wings.. he's shown he can do it at the AHL level and he could very well be the back up in 08-09 and split the season with Osgood. The sole purpose of the Ty Conklin signing was to push Howard and let him know the spot is not his... Conklin and Howard will battle for back up position in training camp so I like this singing.

A little healthy competition for the young guns to crack the roster is a good thing... that's part of the reason why it's a championship team. Darren Helm won't have his spot handed to him either... I'd expect another depth singing like Drake was last year.

Conklin has nice numbers for his 33 games played last season. Conklin will have training camp and the preseason to still compete with Jimmy Howard for the number 2 spot.
Conklin is a seasoned netminder, and he gives the Wings some insurance in case Howard-once again-doesn't step up or if Ozzy gets injured. This is Howards last season before he will have to clear waivers prior to being sent down. The Wings brass's mindset is this gives Howard one last year to develop before other teams get their shot at him-some cushion.

I didn't think the Redwings were ready or comfortable yet in handing the reigns to Howard, neither in a back up role and definitley not as a starter. Conklin will give him some more time to get better in the AHL, and he did wonders for the Pens this season when Fleury went down.
I thought Conklin was done as an NHLer when he let in that terribile goal against the Hurriances in the finals in '06. But he's bounced back pretty good from that. Detroit will be a good fit for him.

Good pickup by the Wings. Conklin had a hell of a year in Pittsburgh, and assuming his game doesn't tumble to where it was a couple years ago, he'll be a real good back-up for Osgood. Detroit still has a pretty good goaltending duo here.
