Ray Emery Out for the Season

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released the following statement today regarding goaltender Ray Emery:

"Ray Emery will have surgery in the near future to repair his right hip. He is suffering from avascular necrosis and will have a bone graft done to alleviate his hip issues. Ray will be out for the remainder of the season."

The surgery will be performed by Dr. David Ruch at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. The date and time of the procedure have not yet been determined.

In 29 games this season, Emery is 16-11-1 with a 2.64 goals against average and .905 save percentage with three shutouts.

He was signed by the Flyers as a free agent on June 10, 2009.

Just read this on thier site. Oh well, I prefer to have Leighton in net anyway. He has been way more consistent. This eliminates the "Emery is our starter, we need to start him", Despite Leighton playing better.

Well if the Flyers put him on LTIR then that gives them some cap space....

as far as leighton, he's earned the right to be the #1 guy at this point

Good call because with how they are talking there it almost sounds like he cant move because he is in so much pain. I wish Ray the best and hopefully he does come back.

Good for Philly.

But in all seriousness, I can't imagine Michael Leighton is the answer between the pipes. They almost have to make a deal for a tender or their playoff hopes could be in serious jeopardy.

valid point. and like some of the flyer homers here i agree he's earned the #1 spot, but deep down you don't wanna try and make it in the playoffs with just michael leighton as your backstop when there appears to be an actual goalie market out there... why the flyers didn't pick up auld is kinda weird knowing that they might be stuck in this situation

I wouldn't exactly say their playoff hopes are in jeopardy. He's been good so far. True, I wouldn't want the Flyers to go in the playoffs with just Leighton, but it isn't like they have Jeff Hackett in the net again.

They could use the cap space. Now if only they could free up more by dealing Briere.

exactly how much of leighton have you seen this season? its one thing to call people homers when they say idiot things like carcillo would beat domi, its another to just throw the word around b/c you dont like the team. flyers fans like michael leighton b/c we've seen every game he's played this year and he's played well.
