Rangers Sign Colton Orr to a Contract Extension

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has signed forward Colton Orr to a contract extension.

Orr, 25, skated in 53 games with the Rangers this season, registering two goals and one assist, along with 126 penalty minutes. His 126 penalty minutes ranked third on the team and tied for 18th in the NHL. On February 9 vs. Tampa Bay, he notched his first career NHL goal, recorded a career-high 15 penalty minutes and earned Second Star honors. In four postseason games, Orr currently ranks second on the Rangers with 12 penalty minutes.

The 6-3, 222-pound winger has skated in 89 career NHL games with the Rangers and Boston Bruins, registering two goals and two assists for four points, along with 197 penalty minutes. Last season, Orr appeared in 35 games with the Rangers and Bruins, registering one assist along with 71 penalty minutes.

In 15 games with the Blueshirts, he collected one assist and 44 penalty minutes. On March 29, 2006, he notched his first career NHL point with an assist in the Rangers 5-1 win at the Islanders. In 2004, he made his NHL debut with Boston on January 8 vs. Pittsburgh.

In 126 career American Hockey League (AHL) contests with the Providence Bruins, Orr registered two goals and 10 assists, along with 543 penalty minutes. During the 2004-05 season, he tallied one goal and six assists in 61 games with Providence (AHL), and led the team with 279 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning professional, Orr spent over four seasons (1999-2003) in the Western Hockey League (WHL), skating with Swift Current, Kamloops and Regina.

The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba was originally signed by the Boston Bruins as a free agent on September 19, 2001. He was claimed off waivers by the Rangers on November 29, 2005.

I think that is above the league minimum too right? If so that is a great break for Orr. Its nice to see some gm's still value tough players to protect skill players. Plus Orr might surprise a few people and put a few in the net next year....

Awesome news for the Rangers. Orr got into some great fights this year, and he had a couple of huge wins over Fedoruk, Boulton, and Shelley, not to mention a fight of the year candidate with Janssen. He has become one of my favorite fighters this year, because he throws a very powerful punch that can do a lot of damage. Just ask Fedoruk (KO), Boulton (KO), and Shelley (bloodied). The things in parentheses is what he did to them. Orr is an exciting fighter to watch, and he has earned a spot on the Rangers roster with his toughness. He's a top 10 heavyweight IMO, so I'm glad he got an extension. However, I bet Bruins fans are bummed that they won't be able to bring him back anymore. It sucks for them that they let him go.

Pretty wise move, as this guy is one of the most feared out there and that keeps teams at bay from taking liberties. I bet Ranger players are happy as hell.

He did not KO Boulton, as it was only a knockdown.
