Rangers Sign Aaron Voros

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Aaron Voros.

Voros, 26, appeared in 55 games with the Minnesota Wild this past season, registering seven goals and seven assists for 14 points, along with 141 penalty minutes in his rookie season. He led the club in penalty minutes (141) and ranked fifth in hits (96).

He also posted four multiple-point games, including two multiple-assist games. Voros made his NHL debut on November 11, at Colorado following his recall from the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL), and he tallied his first career goal on November 16 at Vancouver.

Following the regular season, the first-year player was nominated for the Bill Masterton Trophy, given annually to the player who “best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He also skated in five post-season matches with Minnesota, registering one goal and 16 penalty minutes. He made his NHL playoff debut on April 11 vs. Colorado.

The 6-3, 202-pounder has skated in 223 AHL contests with Albany, Lowell and Houston, registering 44 goals and 47 assists for 91 points, along with 629 penalty minutes. In 2005-06 with Albany, he set career-highs in games played (73), goals (16), points (30), and power play goals (five). He also established personal bests in assists (17) and penalty minutes (220) in 2004-05.

Prior to joining Albany in 2004, he appeared in 89 games with Alaska-Fairbanks of the Central Collegiate Hockey Assocation (CCHA), collecting 36 goals and 25 assists for 61 points, along with 275 penalty minutes. He was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team in 2002, and led the conference in penalty minutes (101).

In addition, he skated in 115 BCHL games with Victoria from 1999-2001, recording 48 goals and 55 assists for 103 points, along with 481 penalty minutes. In the 2001 BCHL Playoffs, he tallied 31 points (16 goals and 15 assists) to help Victoria capture the Fred Page Cup championship.

The Vancouver, British Columbia native was originally New Jersey’s eighth round choice, 229th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Avery has been replaced. Can't say with as good of a player, but a decent pest.

Curious to see how much he signed for after leaving Minny because they wouldn't pay him enough.

Great... another Devils' draft pick goes to the Rags.

I hope he and Clarkson have some good battles next year.

Avery gets replaced but I'll wait to see the money involved here to call this a good deal or not.

Voros doesn't battle, he fights the opponents arm pits mostly.

Like everyone else has already said, we just have to wait and see what the Rangers are paying him before we judge this deal - and with the Rangers, I woudn't be surprised to see that it's an overpayment, because Voros WAS looking for a "big raise" supposedly (which is ridiculous)...

As of now though I like this for the Rangers. They add a middleweight to replace Avery and improve their toughness. Their trio of Orr, Strudwick, and Voros isn't bad.

But we'll see...

Good signing for new york, as long as it isn't an outrageous overpayment.

Voros will replace Avery and Hollweg, the Rangers will let go of Hollweg too I heard.

I agree. Might not be as big a raise as one might think. Minnesota hasn't resigned anybody...

Damn, everyone is picking off all your toughness. I guess this signing seals Avery's fate as a Ranger. Oh well, Imma miss Sean, but that's Free Agency in the NHL for ya. High & lows.
