Rangers Claim Colton Orr Off Waivers

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has acquired right wing Colton Orr from the Boston Bruins, claiming him off waivers.

Orr, 23, has appeared in 20 games for Boston this season, ranking fourth on the team with 27 penalty minutes.

During the 2004-05 season, Orr tallied one goal and six assists in 61 games with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL), and led the team with 279 penalty minutes. In 2003-04, he skated in 64 games with Providence (AHL), recording one goal and four assists, along with 257 penalty minutes. Orr made his NHL debut with the Bruins on January 8, 2004 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 6-3, 226-pounder appeared in 126 career AHL matches with Providence, registering two goals and 10 assists, along with 543 penalty minutes.

Prior to turning professional, Orr spent over four seasons (1999-2003) in the Western Hockey League (WHL), skating with Swift Current, Kamloops and Regina.

The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba was originally signed by the Bruins as a free agent on September 19, 2001.

Wow! Great move by the Rags. The first legitimate enforcer that they've had in a while. This is great for fight fans in general though.

Wow, I totally didn't see this coming at all! Though this is great to see as a fight fan in the new NHL, I doubt he'll actually get called up to the big club. Nevertheless, this should definitely brighten Merlin's day!

Let the mass suicides officially begin, Bruins fans...

This sucks! Orr was one of the few reasons I've been watching Bruins games. Now Bruins fans can watch Dan Lacouture get his @ss kicked in every fight he gets into. This sucks big time! Hopefully Orr gets playing time with NYR and shows the Bruins (O'Connell) they f-u-c-k-e-d up by letting him go.

By claiming him, I believe he has to be on the big club. If he gets sent down, he'll have to go through waivers again.

You mean I may be able to start watching hockey again?

What's that first locker room meeting with Purinton gonna be like?!?

Damn... Rags do something other than add some high priced talent that will flop later. They add a role player . Hopefully he stays with the Rags and isnt going to be send to Hartford. Purinton and Orr on the same team? Strange.

Doesn't he have to stay up with the big club anyway? I thought that anytime a player is claimed off waivers that team HAS to keep the player on their roster for a certain amount of time after being claimed.
