Rangers Buyout Wade Redden

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that the club has bought out the contract of defenseman Wade Redden.

Redden, 35, registered five goals and 35 assists for 40 points, along with 78 penalty minutes in 156 regular season games over two seasons with the Rangers. In addition, Redden tallied two assists in seven playoff contests with the Rangers.

Signed by the Rangers as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2008, Redden has skated the last two seasons with the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL), registering 12 goals and 50 assists for 62 points in 119 games. He was named team captain on March 3, 2012.

The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native has skated in 994 career regular season contests with the Rangers and Ottawa Senators, registering 106 goals and 344 assists for 450 points, along with a plus-162 rating and 654 penalty minutes. Redden is a two-time NHL All-Star (2002 and 2004) and former NHL plus/minus award winner (2006, tie), and has surpassed the 30-point mark in nine of his 13 NHL seasons.

Redden was originally selected by the New York Islanders with the second overall pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.

Shocker! Wouldn't be surprised to see him picked up by a team like the stars Jackets, or Isles.

Good, Redden still has a little to give in the NHL...at less than a million.

They can do a quasi-amnesty buyout this year. What happens is that the buyout only counts towards this season, next year when the cap goes down it does not.

I may be the only person in Ottawa who says this, but for a 750k two-way, I'd take him back.

He never wanted to leave, but agreed to waive his NTC to help out Ottawa. They threw this guy under the ****ing bus. Yes, he was a cokehead. Yes his game fell apart. But Ottawa's defence is so anemic at this point, he'd be an improvement. And a pity signing, in a year when Ottawa isn't seriously contending for the cup, so that he could play his 1000th NHL game as a Senator? Yeah, I wouldn't be upset.

It's never going to happen though, but I'm just saying.

Have always felt sorry for Redden, yeah he was never worth that much, but what you going to do? Turn it down? Hell no!

When he got sent down to the Whale you never heard him moan and groan about it, just got on with it, and was a very good leader down there, got a lot of respect from his teammates and as he was on a lot more money than the other guys, he'd always take out the boys for dinner, he is a good guy and I hope he finds a home for the right price.

Good luck Wade

That's the thing about Redden and Gomez, both are probably guys that could still play in the NHL, they are just "victims" of the contracts they signed. (Note: I don't feel sorry for them in any way, if I was told I could stay home and still get paid I think I'd be ok with that) But for, say 500,000-750,000 you might see these guys perform a little better without the weight of their heavy contracts on their heads. I think it'd be a no-lose situtation for a team to take a look at either of these guys. Not sure if Gomez has actually been bought out yet.

hate this, NYR should be on the hook for the life of the ridiculous deal, end of story.
they buried this guy in the AHL for years to hide him from the cap, and now they just cut him loose. IMO these "amnesty" buyouts are sh!t, the league allowing big money spending teams like NY a "do over" essentially, maybe this guy would have been a Norris Trophy winner if he signed somewhere else, prob. for less money, we'll never know.
I honestly think he should be somewhat of a hot commodity out there on the FA market, this close to the start of season, and camps just starting. Guy brings leadership and experience, and worth more than any other vet defencemen just killing time as a lifer in the AHL.

Plus he has been playing all season, right? He should be in mid season form, which should be better than many guys who haven't been playing and are suffering through a short camp.

I could see somebody needing help on D signing him for the right amount.

Hard to blame a player for the idiocy of a GM. Or one who masquerades as a GM(Sather). Someone will pick up Redden at a much cheaper price as a second or third pairing d-man. My guess is he ends up in the west somewhere.

This will give both Redden and Gomez a chance to find a new home via the FA market , it is a fairly good chance both will be picked up by someone at much less than the contracts they both have at present ....
