Predators Sign Tootoo to Two-Year Extension

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed forward Jordin Tootoo to a two-year, $1.95 million contract extension. In just 41 games in 2007-08, Tootoo has already attained career highs in goals (7) and points (13) in addition to tying a career best in assists.

“Since we drafted Jordin in 2001, we have seen him blossom into a complete player, as evidenced by his gradual increase in production since breaking into the NHL,” Poile said. “Jordin is a physical player that can not only get under opponents’ skin and draw penalties, but has proven he can score at this level as well. We are excited about watching his continued development over the next two seasons.”

Tootoo, 24 (2/2/83), has played 210 career games, all with Nashville, registering 40 points (18g-22a) and 365 penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 9, 2003 vs. Anaheim, becoming the first player of Inuit decent to play in the National Hockey League. In his rookie season in 2003-04, he scored four goals and registered eight points in 70 games to help the Predators to their first playoff appearance in franchise history.

Prior to being put on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury on January 8 at Los Angeles, the Rankin Inlet, Nunavut native was averaging a career-best 10:02 minutes per game. Twice in his past eight appearances in the lineup Tootoo logged more than 15 minutes of ice time, marking the first two times in his career he has hit that mark. The 5-9, 194-pound right wing went through the most productive stretch of his career from Nov. 4-17, 2007, when he scored three goals in a six-game span.

He was originally Nashville’s sixth choice, 98th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Good to hear that he'll continue to piss off our opponents for a couple more years.

During the Preds broadcast last night they had Toots in the booth and he commented on Shelley getting traded. He said now he has alot more room on the ice to stir things up =)

Fids on Toots

Vern Fiddler, when asked which teammate he would want w/him if stuck on a deserted island and why, replied:
"I'd have to say Jordin Tootoo. He's grown up up north where you can kill anything. You can skin anything. I've seen him skin a goose, so I know he's capable of at least feeding us."
Not only this, but he's having a career season, and is playing twenty minutes a game when healthy!

one does not have to put up MVP numbers to be a complete player.

and his point totals could be a reflection of being a career fourth-liner.

because of his hard work and dedication this year, he's been on the third line and also played on the top unit.

Glad to see Tootoo re-signed. I'd prefer him on a team I support, but oh well.

Nashville should trade him to the Pens so Tootoo and Ruutu can be on the same line - what a pest line that would be. (Or to the Rangers to skate with Avery)
