Predators Sign Jonathon Blum

Nashville, Tenn. – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has signed defenseman Jonathon Blum (JAWN-ah-thuhn BLUHM) to an entry-level contract.

Blum, 18 (1/30/89), leads Vancouver Giants defensemen and ranks among Western Hockey League blueliners with 39 points (9g-30a) in 35 games this season. The 6-0, 168-pound native of Long Beach, CA captured the Memorial Cup with the Giants last season and ranked seventh among WHL defensemen with 51 points (8g-43a) during the 2006-07 regular season.

Blum, who has been named to Team U.S.A. for the 2007 World Junior Championships, was Nashville’s first-round selection, 23rd overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Blum is going to be a good one if he puts on a little muscle (about25 lbs )

He'll still be good even without the muscle. He's just so smart with the puck and always seems to be one step ahead of the opposition.

Agreed. Just hope he grows a little bit. 170 is pretty light for a d-man...

In the "old" NHL, I'd say his weight would be an issue...

But with this new restrictive crap and the d-men not allowed to be as physical in front of the net any way, skating prowess and positioning seem to be the necessary components for a d-man.

(Of course it wouldn't hurt if he had more weight than my skinny a55)

It is but like I said what he lacks physically he more than makes up for with hockey intelligence. At his age, he's one of the most reliable defensemen I've ever seen. The extra weight he'll need will come in time, IMO.
