Penguins Trim Roster to 29

The Pittsburgh Penguins have trimmed their training camp roster to 29 players, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Thirteen players have been assigned to the club’s top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL). They are forwards Wade Brookbank, Luca Caputi, Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson, Konstantin Pushkarev, Wyatt Smith, Eric Tangradi, Joe Vitale and Tim Wallace, defensemen Robert Bortuzzo, Jonathan D'Aversa and Chris Lee and goaltender Brad Thiessen.

The Penguins have re-assigned 2009 first-round pick Simon Despres to Saint John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

The moves leave the Penguins with 16 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders remaining in training camp.

I thought Wyatt Smith did well in the faceoff last night. Other than that, he was invisible.

so who are the three forwards Biz Nasty is up against for the 13th forward spot. The only forward I can think of other than Bis that isn't a shoe in is Chris conner

EDIT: just thought of Ryan Bayda, but I really can't think of who else.

Bayda is on a PTO, so the Pens can outright release him at any time.

I get the impression that Guenin will get the 7th D man spot. As for the 13th forward i would love to see Biz win it, however with Godard and Rupp already in the lineup it would seem unlikely Biz will see anytime with the Pens so Conner or Bayda will problay get the final forward spot.

Well I am a bit suprised Jeffrey got demoted...Other then that everyone on that list I expected. Left competing for sport are Biz, Conner up front and Guenin, Lovejoy, and Engelland for the 7th Dman spot. Interesting that Curry is still up though...

I think the only reason Curry is still up is cause Johnson tweaked his knee the other night so its more a percautionary move. Bayda is also still competing for the forward spot, Balsma seems to like what he offers.

I think Conner has that job locked up. Maybe Bayda as an extra forward but usually Shero has only 22 players on the active roster.

The only way Biz makes the team is if the Pens trade Godard and Dupuis. I wonder will anyone pick up Biz when he has to clear waivers?

Of course, if it were up to me, Biz makes it over Conner and Engelland wins the 7th D-man job. Sadly, it ain't up to me. The Pens really can afford to ice the toughest team possible, because scoring will not be a problem for them at all. Even their 3rd line could potentially pot 50 goals this season. But that won't be the way they go...instead we'll get the 5'8" midget and the token Pittsburgher.

the pens would be wise to keep either biz as the extra forward or engelland as the 7th dman. they would match up much better toughness wise with philly if they did.

In a few of us Pens fans perfect little world both Biz and Engelland would make it,but that isn't going to happen.Guenin will be the 7th D-man,and Conner will make it based on his speed that he showed skating down the puck, and sliding that backhanded in against Toronto the other night. So like FIG said we get the 5'8" midget on the fourth line.Godard will sit,and the team toughness will be right down the crapper....

trust me, godard will play against the flyers after the first game when pronger hurts either crosby or malkin. lots of flyers fans want pronger to finish what hatcher started. In fact, during the taping of the meet the flyers show, a fan yelled at pronger and put him on notice that he needs to go after crosby. so yeah, pronger knows what the fans want him to do.

Either way we lose a fighter in this process. Hell maybe even 2. Engelland will proably get claimed as will Biz and if they find someone to move Godard too then we lose Godard instead of Biz. Pick your poision. Also in the article I read it mentions a few teams have made offers for Godard.

And if that happens, the Pens will have no one to blame but themselves. Besides, I don't think Pronger will do it for the simple fact that they most likely will be teammates for Team Canada in the Olympics, and if Crosby is out, it hurts their chances. That's just my opinion, though. That kind of sentiment is why I ****ing HATE Philly fans. I don't care if they hate Crosby, but to actively root for someone to deliberately hurt him is the epitome of low class.
