Penguins Sign Tom Kostopoulos to One-Year Contract

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Tom Kostopoulos to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

Kostopoulos’ contract is a two-way deal worth $600,000 at the NHL level.

Kostopoulos will be placed on waivers on Tuesday at 12 p.m. If he clears waivers, he will be re-assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Wednesday afternoon.

Kostopoulos, 34, re-joins the Penguins organization for his second stint after previously playing for the team between 2001-04, when he tallied 26 points (10G-16A) and 76 penalty minutes in 79 regular-season games.

The 6-foot, 197-pound Kostopoulos was originally drafted by the Penguins in the seventh round (204th overall) of the 1999 NHL Draft. His best season with the Penguins came in 2003-04 when he notched nine goals, 13 assists and 22 points in 60 games. His nine goals were a career high.

This season the Mississauga, Ontario native has been playing for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on a professional tryout contract. Kostopoulos has totaled seven points (3G-4A) and 43 penalty minutes in 17 games with WBS. He has four points (3G-1A) over his previous four games. Last Friday, Kostopoulos became the first player in WBS history to score 100 regular-season goals.

Kostopoulos has played in 615 career NHL regular-season games with Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Montreal, Carolina and Calgary, amassing 60 goals, 96 assists and 156 points. Last season he appeared in 81 games with the Flames, registering 12 points (4G-8A) and 57 penalty minutes. Kostopoulos has added five points (3G-2A) in 16 career NHL playoff games.

Can't wait to see Lasse Pirjeta get a contract next! No idea what this team is doing anymore.

This had better be for WBS only. The Pens already have a Kostopoulos clone on the team. His name is Craig Adams. One is enough, thanks.

I have absolutely no fukking idea what Ray Shero is doing. If somebody figures it out, please let me know. Suck ass retreads like Eaton and Kostopoulos are not what this team needs.

Adams, Cooke, Kostopoulos. 3 of the worst fighting records in the NHL. They have engelland too though who's one of the top guys.

Was thinking the exact same about Adams and Tom K! Maybe the Pens can make a deal for Greg Campbell and they'd have the willing loser trifecta!

Might as well get Kelly Buchberger and Steve Webb out of retirement.

He has to go through waivers and apparently was already practicing with WBS today. So I'm hoping that is where he is staying.

If you put him up in Pittsburgh, you have two punching bags along with Craig Adams Where is Big Mac when you need him? I know Engelland is a good fighter, but come on now he's just rotting away in the AHL. Wish someone would take a chance with him.

Tommy is always bringing 100%, and was often the hardest working Flame on the ice, I always respected that. He has the heart of a lion - a lion that gets KO'd. Honestly best of luck to him but he seems redundant on the pens. I thought maybe Edmonton could use him.

WTF is pittsburgh doing turning Big mac into a juinor chicken ... one of the best heavys period and plenty of dance partners.. does anyone remember Ivanans? yeah me too
