Penguins Sign Satan and Fedotenko

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forwards Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko to one-year contracts, it was announced Thursday by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Satan, 33, skated in 80 games with the New York Islanders last season, registering 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists). He was tied for third on the club in scoring and finished second on the team with four game-winning goals. Satan collected 13 points on the power play (five goals, eight assists) ranking fourth on the club, while adding four game-winning tallies.

"Miroslav brings skill, experience and size to our hockey team," Shero said. "He is a player that has put up very good offensive numbers in the NHL. By playing with our core group of forwards he should only be able to build upon those numbers and provide offense for our hockey club."

Satan has recorded 25-or-more goals in nine of his 12 seasons and scored 30-or-more goals on four occasions. He posted a career-high 40 goals during the 1998-99 season and a career-high 75 points (26 goals, 49 assists) during the 2003-04 season, both with Buffalo. He has appeared in 80-or-more games in eight NHL seasons, including in each of the past four years. Satan has skated in 56 career playoff games, scoring 38 points (15 goals, 23 assists), including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final following the 1998-99 season.

The 6-3, 191-pound native of Topolcany, Slovakia was originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fifth round (111th overall) of the 1993 NHL Draft. Satan has played 12 seasons in the NHL totaling 685 points (337 goals, 348 assists) in 947 career games.

Fedotenko, 29, scored 33 points (16 goals, 17 assists) in 67 games with the New York Islanders during the 2007-08 season. He led the team and registered a career-high with eight power play goals. Fedotenko equaled a career-high three-game goal streak from February 12th to 16th, scoring four goals, including two game-winners. He finished fourth on the Islanders with 104 hits.

Fedotenko has played 53 career playoff games, scoring 17 points (13 goals, four assists). He was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning when they captured the Stanley Cup following the 2003-04 season. Fedotenko tied for the team lead in those playoffs with 12 goals, including both goals in the 2-1 series-clinching victory vs. the Calgary Flames. The 6-2, 195-pound native of Kiev, Ukraine scored a career-high 41 points (26 goals, 15 assists) during the 2005-06 season with the Lightning.

Fedotenko was originally signed as an undrafted free agent for the Philadelphia Flyers in August 1999. He made his NHL debut with the Flyers during the 2000-01 season and played one more season with the team before being traded to Tampa Bay on June 21st, 2002. After four seasons with Tampa Bay, he signed as a free agent with the New York Islanders on July 4th, 2007. Fedotenko has played seven NHL seasons totaling 239 points (123 goals, 116 assists) in 523 career games.

I like these signings for Pittsburgh, the key being 1-year deals. It doesn't effect the long-term look of the team, they just needed some wingers who could put the puck in the net when Sid or Malkin give it to them.

Definitely gave Satan too much, but it doesn't matter. It's just a 1 year deal for both, and with Hossa not coming back they had a little more spending money. They'll certainly help the Pens out on offense a little this season.

Good depth signings.

May be a little much, true, but by playing alongside Staal, Sykora, Crosby and Malkin, both these guys should be able to produce and enjoy some solid seasons in Pittsburgh.

Playing on Crosby's line Satan should be able to score 25 plus goals if he plays the majority of the season injury free, Fedotenko should be good for 20 goals if he's on the first or second line. Not a bad pick ups after signing Fleury to a long term deal, its been a good day for the Pens.

Hossa paid for them both. But then you think of Orpik, Fleury and Malkin, where is the loot coming from?

The combination of Hossa leaving and Malkin's contract extension not kicking in until next season is why they can afford them. There are no shenanigans or preferential treatment involved here.

Anyway, the Pens have gone from having Malone and Hossa on our top lines to Satan and Fedotenko. *sighs* Oh well, these are our guys, so I'm going to get behind them and hope they put a few pucks in the net.

Both of them played pretty terrible, Satan had his moments but for Tank, besides a few nice hits, he sucked all year.
