Penguins Re-Sign Nasreddine and Pivko

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Alain Nasreddine and forward Libor Pivko to one-year contracts, it was announced Wednesday by General Manager Ray Shero.

Nasreddine, 31, appeared in 71 games during the 2005-06 regular season with the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, recording 12 assists and 71 penalty minutes.

Nasreddine led Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and ranked second among AHL defensemen with a plus-24 rating.

The 6-1 and 208-pound native of Montreal, Quebec has served as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s captain for each of the past two seasons.

Nasreddine was recalled by the Penguins from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Mar. 10 and appeared in six games with Pittsburgh, going scoreless with a plus-2 rating and eight penalty minutes.

Nasreddine has appeared in 163 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton over the last two-plus seasons, recording 32 points (4+28) and 216 penalty minutes. He was acquired by the Penguins from the New York Islanders on Mar. 8, 2004 in exchange for Steve Webb.

Pivko, 26, appeared in 69 games for the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League during the 2005-06 season, tallying 70 points (12+58) and 63 penalty minutes. His 70 points were second on the team and he finished first on the team in assists (58). In 12 Calder Cup Championship playoff games, he recorded eight points (3+5) and 16 penalty minutes.

The 6-3 and 214 pound forward appeared in 192 games in three seasons with Milwaukee, recording 121 points (28+93) and 172 penalty minutes. He has played in one game in his National Hockey League career, going scoreless.

The native of Novy Vicin, Czech Republic was acquired by the Penguins from the Nashville Predators with Dominic Moore in exchange for a 2007 third round draft choice. Pivko was Nashville’s third round choice (89th overall) in the 2000 Entry Draft.

good signing, a solid experienced vet at the AHL level and a good fill in guy for the big club, was pretty impressed with what I saw of him last year and I'd like to see him about 20 more times next season

Nasreddine is a good depth defenseman and as long as he's not pressed into playing at the NHL level too much. Pretty tough too.

Steve Webb for Commissioner.

glad to see Naz back in a pens uniform. I wish he could take Melichar's or Scuderi's job from them. definately a better 6th d-man then either of them.
