Penguins Re-Sign Nasreddine

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed defenseman Alain Nasreddine to a one-year contract, it was announced Monday by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.

Nasreddine, 32, played 44 games for the Penguins during the 2006-07 season collecting five points (one goal, four assists) and 18 penalty minutes. He ranked second on the club with a plus-12 rating. Nasreddine registered an even-or-better plus/minus in 15 consecutive games from January 13th to March 2nd. He scored his first career NHL goal on December 16th in his hometown of Montreal. The 6-1, 204-pound defenseman also compiled a three-game assist streak from March 13th to March 16th, all victories by the Penguins.

Nasreddine was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on December 4th and spent the remainder of the season in Pittsburgh. He played 19 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and tallied eight points (three goals, five assists) and registered a plus-nine rating while also serving as the team captain. Nasreddine was acquired by the Penguins organization via trade with the New York Islanders on March 8th, 2004. He spent parts of the last four seasons with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton playing a total of 182 games and scoring 40 points (seven goals, 33 assists) while registering a plus-44 rating.

Prior to his time with the Penguins organization, Nasreddine played a total of 18 NHL games split between the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and Chicago Blackhawks. He also has played 764 games combined in the AHL and IHL during his 12-year professional career.

Nasreddine was originally drafted in the sixth round (135th overall) in the 1993 Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Pens currently have 7 D listed on their roster, Letang not included.
IMO Nasreddine should play over Rob Scuderi, but the management seems to like Scuderi alot.

It's a 2-way deal, which I cannot understand. I thought he was fairly solid last season - his +12 was the second-highest on the team after Jordan Staal. I'd rather have him be the 7th D-man than Rob Scuderi.

Glad to see him resign. I was really pissed when he didn't see any ice time in the playoffs last season. IMO he's better than scuderi and melichar.

I hope he beats out Scuderi in camp. He was a hell of a lot better than him last season.

He's played well for the Pens. Good signing.
