Penguins Re-Sign Forward Tyler Kennedy

The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed forward Tyler Kennedy to a two-year extension through the 2010-11 season, it was announced today by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ray Shero.

Kennedy, 22, played 55 games for the Penguins last season, registering 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) along with 35 penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut Oct. 27, 2007 vs. Montreal and scored his first NHL goal three games later November 3, 2007 against the New York Islanders. Kennedy tallied a career-high three points (one goal, two assists) twice in his rookie season. He finished the season tied for third on the team with four game-winning goals. Kennedy skated in 20 playoff games with the Penguins, recording four assists and 13 penalty minutes.

The native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario also posted nine points (five goals, four assists) and 10 penalty minutes in 10 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Kennedy was selected to play in the YoungStars game at NHL All-Star weekend but was unable to participate due to an illness.

The 5-11, 183-pound forward has recorded 46 career points (17 goals, 29 assists) in the AHL in 50 games over two seasons. Kennedy was drafted by the Penguins in the third round (62nd overall) in the 2005 Entry Draft.

TK is a great energy guy - works his tail off on every shift. Not the most gifted in terms of scoring goals, but he's good for 10-15 a year. He's not afraid to drop the gloves either. Good re-signing.

Huge fan of Kennedy's. Saw him score a highlight reel goal against the Leafs in early January at a game I was privileged to attend. He's a little tiger out there, in the mold of a Scotty Nichol with more sense and talent. More players should play like him.

Got to meet Mr.Kenneddddddddddddddddddddddy at the Bucco game this year in the outfield bleachers none the less. Great kid with a good bit of energy. Love the little tiger. I hope he will be a Penguin for quite some time.
