Penguins Re-Sign Arron Asham

The Pittsburgh Penguins have agreed to terms with forward Arron Asham on a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The deal is worth $775,000.

Asham, 33, recently completed his first season with the Penguins. The veteran winger was one of Pittsburgh’s top performers during the postseason, leading the team with three goals and tying for the team lead with four points in seven games.

During the regular season, the Portage La Prairie, MB native appeared in 44 contests, notching five goals, six assists and 11 points after originally signing as a free agent with Pittsburgh on August 20, 2010.

The 5-foot-11, 205-pound forward joined the Penguins last summer just months after collecting seven points (4G-3A) in 23 postseason contests for the Philadelphia Flyers in 2009-10, helping the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup Final.

Prior to joining Pittsburgh, Asham spent his first 10 seasons playing for Montreal, NY Islanders, New Jersey and Philadelphia after being selected by Montreal in the third round (71st overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Heading into this season, Asham has amassed 190 career points (87G-103A) and 864 penalty minutes in 692 regular-season games. He has added 17 points (9G-8A) in 59 postseason contests.

Before making his NHL debut with Montreal against the Penguins on Nov. 28, 1998, Asham spent four seasons with Red Deer of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In 266 career games with the Rebels, he posted 131 goals, 161 assists and 292 points.

Damn, I really wanted the Flyers to grab him again. Oh well, still a huge Asham fan. Hope he stays healthy this year.

Good bye Mike Rupp. Saw he apparently turned down a 2 year deal just tonight and they hammered this deal out with Asham instead.

Team is starting to shape up very nicely.

I love the signing of Asham but if that means Rupp is gone I'm genuinely concerned about what they intend to do for toughness. They really need a HW, especially after all the injuries last year. I'd love to see Eric Boulton in a Pens sweater. Failing that maybe make Big Mac an offer or try to get Godard to come back, but they need something.

Pretty much echo Jean's sentiments here. I really, really hope Engelland and Asham aren't going to be it for toughness, and either Rupp comes back or they bring in another HW like Boulton.

I've wanted the Rangers to sign Asham for years, but they never do. Guy can score 10 a year and is an excellent MW/LHW.

Surprised he cant get more than 775k.

asham could get around 900 somewhere else but on a crappy team. the man wants to win and play for a team with fans like the pens.

i hope rupp goes to a weaker team or the sharks.

Great signing at a great price. Way better than overpaying Rupp.

I expect the pens will sign an enforcer after July 1.. the cap won't be an issue and they have some nice options out there. Also Shero never is shy about signing toughness. I agree with the above posters if they don't resign Godard I think Boulton would be a nice fit and be able to take a regular shift
