Penguins Place Cairns on IR; Recall Erik Christensen

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have placed defenseman Eric Cairns on injured reserve with post-concussion symptoms and recalled center Erik Christensen from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, it was announced Wednesday by general manager Ray Shero.

Cairns, 32, has played one game with the Penguins this season, recording five penalty minutes. He has played 457 career NHL games with the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Florida and the Penguins.

Christensen, 22, leads the AHL Penguins with 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points through 16 games this season. He is tied for fifth in the league in goals, ranks sixth in points and is tied for first in game-winning goals (3).

The 6-foot-1, 196-pound native of Edmonton made his NHL debut with the Penguins last season, registering 13 points (6+7) in 33 games in three stints with Pittsburgh. He was drafted by the Penguins in the third round (69th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Either he is injured or it's a cop-out way to not make him a healthy scratch all the time (I'm sure there's ways to keep a player on the IR without actual injuries - especially seeing as much time he spent on it this season already).

Eh.

Holy crap. No way McGrattan injured him. That's impressive. Cairns has a hard head. How many times did Chara unload on him last year and he didn't receive a concussion.

Really bad? Cmon thats a bit much while he may not be like his Islander days its understandable..

He hasnt played in about a year, gets his 1st shift as a Penguin (1 whole second BTW 1 sec) and takes on 1 of the toughest/biggest fighters in the league! -- BTW he did pretty good in the fight, you should watch it again the fight was actually pretty close, dare i say a draw..

Sad to say it, but it looks like the end is near. As an Islander fan, I will always remember him skating off the ice with his finger in the air after pummeling Shane Corson in the playoffs against Toronto. Very fond memories...good luck Eric!

Sure, that was a bit overkill but post-conussion syndrome + fighter role = new career

Cairnsy takes another trip to the IR? Shame. Christensen may provide some offense for the Pens though.
