Penguins' Paul Martin Out 4-6 Weeks with Broken Hand

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Paul Martin underwent surgery on a broken bone in his hand Sunday morning and will miss 4-6 weeks.

General Manager Ray Shero said Martin will be able to resume skating in about a week and a half.

Dr. Robert A. Kaufmann performed the surgery.

On the plus side this means Engelland will be playing and not scratched until Letang returns.

Martin was having a good season too, but the Pens do have a lot of depth on defense.

Deryk Engelland, come on down!

Sorry, Paul.

I wouldn't call it depth, but the Pens do have bodies that can fill D-spots. As a non-Penguin fan that doesn't care about their success and a fight fan, don't mind see Engelland in every night. But the suspect D gets more suspect just in time for the early playoffs.

Suspect D? You talking about the same team that's given up 9 goals in the last 10 games?

Downplay it if you want, this is not good. At all. Martin has arguably been the Pens' steadiest defenseman this season. It seems like every fukking year the team has to battle injuries to key players. And this one happens at the worst possible time. Kris Letang had better get his ass back on the ice ASAP.

If Letang, the Pens' best defenseman (and some of you mocked me for saying it earlier in the season), has a broken toe, don't expect to see him any time soon.

I think he's referring to the fact that the Pens gave up 30 goals in a 6 game playoff series loss last year and now have their top 2 defenseman sidelined for possibly a significant amount of time.

Well then they should trade for another defenseman, because they can't go into the playoffs with the guys in the lineup today. Not nearly good enough.

They have more than enough offensive firepower to overcome it, and it's not like Engelland is a pylon by any stretch.

Fleury will just have to play well. That's why he's paid.

Didn't we say the same thing last year? And what happened? 6 games and done with 30 goals allowed.

But you're right that Fleury can't fukk up. He is the one person on the team that makes me the most nervous, because he can make the spectacular saves, and then let in a soft, backbreaking goal to lose a game. Vokoun is a good backup, but not a guy who can carry them to a championship.

They didn't have Morrow and Iginla last year. The leadership on this team is sick.

Again, Engelland is very capable, and the D just got more physical.
