Penguins Ink Forward Mike Comrie
The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Mike Comrie to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
The contract is for the 2010-11 season and is worth $500,000. Comrie, 29, has played nine NHL seasons with Edmonton, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Ottawa and the NY Islanders. In 568 career games, he has posted 167 goals, 192 assists, 359 points and 48 power-play goals. Comrie has appeared in 32 postseason contests, totaling 10 points (4G-6A). Comrie (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) has scored 20 or more goals five times in his career, and twice hit the 30-goal mark. The Edmonton, Alberta native, who broke into the NHL in 2000 with his hometown Oilers after the club drafted him in the third round (91st overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, set career highs with 33 goals and 60 points (tied) in 2001-02. Comrie, whose uncle Fred Comrie was drafted by the Penguins in 1973 (eighth round, 119th overall) but never suited up for Pittsburgh, has represented Canada in three World Championships (2002, ’03 and ’06). He helped his country earn a gold medal in the 2003 tournament. Comrie starred in two seasons with the University of Michigan. He totaled 43 goals, 60 assists and 103 points in just 82 collegiate games. In his second and final season as a Wolverine, Comrie led the team in goals (24), assists (35) and points (59). His 59 points ranked fifth (tied) in the NCAA, and he was named as a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the best college hockey player. Comrie helped Michigan win the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff championship as a freshman. He was named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team, CCHA First All-Star Team and CCHA Rookie of the Year after posting 44 points (19G-25A). Last edited by Thrillhouse; 09-03-2010 at 11:19 AM. |

Comrie was a victim of the influx of kids in Edmonton. I would rather see Hall, Eberle or Pjaarvi-Svensson in the top 6 role than Comrie for sure this year...
It doesn't matter - they are going to lose every game anyways. Comrie, when healthy, did bring some offense to the table last year. This is likely a good signing (as long as it is cheap) for Pitts...

I think I would have gone with Guerin instead. At least with him you'd also get what little physicality he has left. Everything else between the two I believe is a wash.

For 500K this is a good deal. If he plays alongside Crosby he should score 25 plus goals.

Guerin is slow and can not keep up with the play, on top 2 lines. It least Comrie will be able to keep up. Guerin should of scored 30 plus goals last year with all the great passes he recieved but he can't finish like he use too. As much as i respect Billy his time has passed and he should hang up the skates.

I hate Pittsburgh but I think this is a good signing, especially at that price.
Also a very smart move on Comrie's part, take a lower salary to play along side Crosby and potenially have a very good offensive season and get a nice raise next season. For Pittsburgh they get a skilled hockey player for cheap who will also double as Crosby's protector cause even Comrie's tougher then Sid. |

Good pickup. ****er killed the Wild seemingly every time we played the Oil.
If Guerin was looking to come back for under a mill, I would have took him. But, as mentioned, Comrie still has the wheels to keep up with those top two lines and the skills to finish. Guerin, while a throwback kind of warrior, clearly had age creep into his legs last year, but still showed that with a good setup man, he can still rip shots to the twine. I'd call it a wash in the end between Billy and Comrie.

Hate the signing. Just gives us another center who is forced to play wing. Id rather give Tangradi a shot at playing on the top 2 lines first.
