Penguins Claim Karl Stewart Off Waivers From Ducks

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed forward Karl Stewart off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks, it was announced Wednesday by General Manager Ray Shero.

Stewart, 23, has appeared in 13 NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers, recording one assist and 19 penalty minutes. In 171 American Hockey League games with the Chicago Wolves, Stewart recorded 106 points (48+58) and 596 penalty minutes.

Stewart was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Thrashers on September 28, 2001. He made his professional debut in 2003-04, appearing in five games with the Thrashers and in 72 games with the Wolves. Stewart recorded 42 points (10+32) and 186 penalty minutes with Chicago and one assist in five games with Atlanta. In 77 games with Chicago in 2004-05, Stewart recorded 24 points (16+8) and 226 penalty minutes. Stewart recorded 40 points (22+18) and 184 penalty minutes in 71 games with Chicago in 2005-06 and appeared in eight games with Atlanta going scoreless with 15 penalty minutes.

The 5-11 and 185 pound native of Aurora, Ontario played three years of junior hockey for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (2000-03), recording 151 points (64+87) and 311 penalty minutes in 201 games.

Stewart was acquired by Anaheim on August 17, 2006 with a second round draft pick in the 2007 Entry Draft in exchange for Vitaly Vishnevski.

Does Pittsburgh really have a spot in their lineup for Stewart? If the Penguins try to send him down to the AHL at any point this season the Ducks will have first rights to reclaim him.

I'm not sure he'd be needed with the Baby Pens. They've got more than enough toughness down there, and Stewart can help in Pittsburgh.

Interesting move. I didn't know they needed a guy like him given all of their signings. They could become quite the not fun team to play against.

It's pretty obvious that Ray Shero thinks you can't have too many tough guys. I don't know if Stewart is needed with the Pens - I thought that Daniel Carcillo would make the team to take Petrovicky's place since he's out with an injury, but maybe not after this signing.

He's an agitator who fights when he has to. He's an energy player but not really a fighter.

Don't be shocked if Carins is releases.. He is big and slow and doesn't handle the puck that well.

Stone and Carcillo will probably go to WBS..

Stewart and Talbot will stay up, but Roy will play in every 5 games.
