Penguins Claim Chris Thorburn Off Waivers from Buffalo

PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed forward Chris Thorburn off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres, it was announced Tuesday by General Manager Ray Shero.

Thorburn, 23, appeared in 77 games with Rochester Americans (AHL) during the 2005-06 season, establishing career highs in goals (23), assists (27) and points (50). He led Rochester in goals, tied for third on the club in scoring and ranked fifth on the team in penalty minutes. Thorburn also appeared in two games last season with the Sabres, recording one assist and seven penalty minutes.

Thorburn has appeared in 208 games with Rochester (2003-06), recording 101 points (41+60) and 396 penalty minutes.

The 6-3 and 210-pound native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario was drafted by Buffalo in the second round (50th overall) of the 2001 Entry Draft

Way to go Pittsburgh! They are not effing around this season.

Also good for the fantasy PIM league:approve:

I would expect Thorburn to get some decent playing time in Pittsburgh, and nice to see the Pens pick up a little more grit. Of all the guys placed on waivers yesterday I thought Marshall might go first.

Way to go Pittsburgh, they are going to be fun to watch this year.

Likely in Staal's spot, no point in plugging him in the 4th line all season.

Rumor going around that Buffalo sent a player down after this news and are looking to claim someone...hmmmm.

Staal will most likely be the 2nd line center untill Crosby gets back. lines looking something like this right now

Eckman-Crosby-Armstrong
Recchi-Staal-Malone
Leclair-Moore-Ruutu
Roy-Stewart-Oullet

I've gotta think that Thorburn would take Oullet's spot. Staal will be sent back to juniors. When Malkin is healthy.

waiver draft could be fun this year. Some good players.

That makes a whole lot of sense (I assume you mean Malkin, not Crosby :)) but I was reading that opening night, Staal's gonna be playing 3rd-4th line.

We're up at the top of the list of teams with the most grit.. Could be leading the pack...

cowboy 10-03-2006 02:32 PM

you are correct that I ment Malkin

If Stall is going to be playing on the 3rd line then that would most likely mean the lines would look more like

Eckman-Crosby-Armstrong
Leclair-Malone-Recchi
Staal-Moore-Ruutu
Roy-Stewart-Oullet

Either way Oullet just doesn't belong.

thorburn will be a nice fit on the fourth line. he's a gritty guy who loves to muck it up. pretty decent skills. he should fit on that line nicely.

no such thing in the new CBA. Waiver draft died with the old CBA.

waivers still exist though.
