Penguins' Cairns Suspended for Three Games
TORONTO -- Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Eric Cairns has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a game misconduct during NHL game #1022 against the Ottawa Senators on March 21.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Cairns will forfeit $9,015.30. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Cairns was assessed a game misconduct for an incident that occurred at the end of the second period.

Cairns will miss Friday's game against the New York Islanders; March 26 against Montreal and March 29 against Florida. He will be eligible to return March 31 in New York against the Islanders.

didn't he also come from the bench to get involved in the scrum and then fight with Chara? I thought I had read that in the game thread.

I'm going to assume it was for the fisticuffs after the period ended. IF that is the case why didn't Chara get suspended? We need more info, because if it was for the one-handed 'spear', this league is getting very lame. I'm sure Cairns' rep is one reason he got three games, but c'mon, I've seen way worse NOT called!!!

I agree, 3 games is too much.. he got 2 game misconducts.. so give em 2 games.. Yes he came from the bench after the 2nd period and lured Chara into going

I just watched the video again, and he wasn't on the blue line for the Pens, so the leaving the bench has to be what got him three. That makes more sense.

2 spears and leaving the bench...I am surprised it is only 3...I was thinking 5! That being said I am glad the league used their discretion and capped at three games

He got away with a hitting from behind the other night don't forget. I think 2 games was called for, but they gave him 3 just to make up.

he's actually lucky not to have gotten the 10 game suspension usually levied for leaving the bench to fight! 3 games is nothing compared to the possible 10 he did not receive!

I'm actually surprised it was only 3.
As was said, he left the bench to fight (which I'm proud of ) and in this NHL I expected a bare minimum of 5
