Penguins Add Defenseman Zbynek Michalek

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed defenseman Zbynek Michalek (z’BIGH-nehk mih-KHAL-ihk) to a five-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract runs through the 2014-15 season, and has an average annual value of $4 million dollars over the term of the contract.

Michalek, 27, has played six NHL seasons, the last five with the Phoenix Coyotes, totaling 27 goals, 88 assists and 115 points in 415 games. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound blueliner led the NHL in blocked shots in 2008-09 with 271.

Michalek posted 17 points (3G-14A) in 72 games for the Coyotes in 2009-10. He added two assists in seven postseason games for Phoenix.

The Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic native represented his country in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. Michalek also played for the Czech Republic at the World Championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He scored three goals in nine games in 2006 to help his country earn a silver medal.

Michalek, who broke into the NHL with Minnesota in 2003-04, won the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup Championship with the Wild’s top-affiliate the Houston Aeros in 2003.

First thought I had.

Z really came into his own last year, and his puck moving abilities and seeing eye shots will really be missed.

Interesting. NHL Live has Eric Belanger in studio right now, and as the Michalek signing went down, he was able to give some personal input into the kind of player Z is, rather than EJ Hradek and the host just spouting out nothing.

that's surprising but not at the same time that the nhl wouldn't let the yotes fork up that money for him. its a really decent price for him.

Pens fans will love him. He is a really good defenseman and I couldn't say anything bad about him. We'll miss him.

Solid signing, and the price IMO is reasonable. I've seen him play a few times and he really impressed me. He will definitely help the Pens' blueline.

That's a big hole to fill for the Yotes now. Pens are getting a solid player.

Fcking dammit. Pens get Mihaleck, who's 10 years younger than Gonchar, and wanted Ottawa as his first choice, apparently. Bryan Murray swoops in and picks up their leftovers. Brilliant.

Finally Shero comes thru, this makes more sense then signing a 36 year old to a 3 or 4 year deal for more money.

Gonchar and Michalek are completely opposite defensemen. However I'd take Michalek any day of the week over Gonchar especially at this point in each of their careers. The financial situation makes this deal even better for the Pens, IMO.
