The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Wade Brookbank from the Boston Bruins for future considerations, it was announced Tuesday by general manager Ray Shero.

Brookbank has been assigned to the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

A 6-4, 225 pound native of Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Brookbank has appeared in seven games with Boston this season, recording one goal and 15 penalty minutes. He also spent four games with the Providence Bruins (AHL), going scoreless with 15 penalty minutes.

Brookbank, 28, appeared in an NHL career-high 32 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season, recording three points (1+2) and 81 penalty minutes. He has appeared in a total of 68 career NHL games with the Bruins, Canucks and Nashville Predators, recording six points (4+2) and 229 penalty minutes.

Brookbank has played 167 American Hockey League games with Grand Rapids, Binghamton, Milwaukee, Manitoba and Providence, combining for seven points (1+6) and 714 penalty minutes. He also appeared in 29 games with Orlando of the International Hockey League and 114 games with Oklahoma City of the Central Hockey League.

a line up with cairns and brookbank is pretty scary. Doubt they'll both dress because they are both defenders.(I think)

wishful thinking to have a combo of Brookbank and Cairns, but reality says that Cairns is near the end of the road..it's possible...but I doubt we;ll see both, unless the Pens are getting pushed around. Maybe watching their franchise in Crosby nearly get into fights has prompted this move.

Brookbank "traded"..lol...I laugh when I read that...the poor guy has played for almost every team in the NHL.

why would the Pens trade for Brookbank to play in WB/S when they already have Carcillo and Bonvie in WB/S. I have to think he'll see some time in Pittsburgh and that Cairns is done. You don't just make trades for the sake of making trades.

I didn't want to jinx it..but I think Brookbank will play for the big club as well. Probably his "last" shot as well.

Cairns more than likely will announce what we already know soon.. he's done.
Or the Pens will simply drop him.
