Paul Kariya Retires

TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
Paul Kariya tells @eduatschek of the Globe he's retiring. Quite a player in his day. @MikeMcKenzie11's favorite player once upon a time.

His article goes on to talk about headshots and lets just say he is pretty blunt.

Possibly my favorite quote though.

Quote:
Kariya: You have best player in the game playing on a the same team as a guy (Cooke) who is ending guys’ careers with those kinds of hits.

Him scoring a goal after the Scott Stevens hit in the Finals gave me goosebumps. One of my favorite hockey memories even though he was a Duck.

Thats too bad. I believe he really could have still done some offensive damage if his head wasn't all mushy.

I thought he was dead after that hit from Stevens.

Seriously though, kind of sad how such a once great and promising career came sputtering to an end. 10 years ago you might have thought he'd be a hall of fame candidate, but now he'd just be a wandering afterthought. Really too bad how injuries, espececially concussions, took such a toll on him. I know I've posted this many times before, but I still believe he was never quite the same player after the cheapshot from Gary Suter.

All the best in retirement, Paul!

The Kariya signing for the Preds back in the day was huge.

Thanks Paul. Good luck in retirement.

I think he made the right call, he was good when he was healthy.

Like lindros was brought down in his prime by head shots.

He was an extremely hard working superstar. I remember in his second season in the league he spent a lot of his off season working on his backhand.

When the aves signed de Anne and kariya it was thought of as a huge blockbuster. That duo was supposed to dominate. What a bust they both were although teemu went on to greatness. Paul was as good if not better then we selanne.

161 pts in 164 games (he played in all 82 games for 2 seasons with the Preds) is hardly roadkill.

Yeah I take that back, he did play very well for nashville also and he didn't miss as many games as I thought...it just seemed like he was always getting leveled.

This is true, but back when the Preds had some stones, at least they would make the other team pay for the hit.

Hordi and Avery

The announcers for the Kings were light in the loafers as well calling this.

Now Nashville has to have 6 centers signed for the year since 3 of them will be on long term IR by January.

Kariya ended his career exactly a point per game average. He was 11 games and points away from hitting the 1000 career games and points milestones.

What a player ! Wish that he could have won the Cup with the Ducks and Selänne at 2007. NHL will miss you, good luck in retirement Paul.
