Panthers Acquire T.J. Brennan from Sabres

SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers Executive VP & General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has acquired defenseman T.J. Brennan from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Florida’s fifth round selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The fifth round draft pick was originally acquired by Florida from Los Angeles on Feb. 8.

“T.J. is a young and mobile defenseman with a hard shot, who we are pleased to have acquired,” said Tallon. “He is a hard working player with an offensive upside, who has averaged almost a point-per-game in the American Hockey League this season. We look forward to his contributions to our organization.”

Brennan, 23, has played in 21 National Hockey League games, all with Buffalo (2011-2013) scoring two goals with 12 PIM. He has played in 36 games with Rochester (AHL) this season, ranking first on the club in goals by a defenseman (14), while placing fourth on the team with 35 points (14-21-35).

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound defenseman was drafted by Buffalo Sabres in the second round (31st overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The Willingboro, New Jersey native, played for Florida Head Coach Kevin Dineen for two seasons in the AHL with the Portland Pirates (2009-2011).

Wow. TJ was one of the best dmen in ahl this year. Was hoping to keep him over sekera or leopold. We have too many dmen. I don't like that we only got fifth round.

Can somebody please explain to me what the conditions are that a player does or does have to clear waiver in order to go back to the AHL.

Brennan is worth more than a 5th rounder. Sabres will be busy before trade deadline.

Another player going for virtually nothing. Brennan was a borderline 1st rounder (went 31st) and seems to have been progressing steadily... I know it's the waiver situation but f*ck, a 5th rounder??

With Sulzer out for the season I guess Pardy is our 7th D-man now and we won't be caring him on our roster.
I'd really like to know if McCormick still makes his million dollar contract or if it gets reduced because hes down because it's not effecting our cap???

Do the Sabres have a full roster? I would like to see Brayden McNabb called-up from Rochester. He is going to be a great two-way defenseman in the future, he is not afraid to drop the gloves.

mccormick is on a one-way, so he gets every penny in the contract

no, they currently are at 21 players. leino is on injured reserve and reportedly is close to returning for the sabres. im sure there is a recall coming, if needed but it's also possible they want to keep the prospects (excluding pardy) in rochester to make a playoff run there and also to keep a winning mentality unlike in buffalo currently.

I thought Buffalo was high on Brennan? He had a good year in Rochester pre lockout and everything. Seems like a weak return for a guy like Brennan. At least get someone from San Antonio or something.

Good move, trade away the young players for nothing and keep the veterans mostly overpaid.

Ok we have McNabb and Pysyk but a 5th rounder for Brennan? Sounds like a steal for the Panthers.
