Oilers Trade Steve Staios to Calgary

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Aaron Johnson and a 3rd round draft pick from the Calgary Flames in exchange for defenceman Steve Staios.

Johnson, 26, had played in 22 games this season for the Flames recording a goal and two assists with 19 PIM.

The 6’2”, 211lb rearguard was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 3rd round, 85th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Good luck Steve! Another brick in the wall of the retooling process.

Never thought I'd see the day. Flames fans have hated this guy for years!

It may generate more of a response than when the Flames signed Bertuzzi!

Solid veteran pick up for the right price. Aaron Johnson can have a big upside aswell. I liked him during his stint in Chicago.

Staois has also now completed the very rare Western Canadian trifecta!

He's now been part of the Canucks, Oilers, and Flames organizations.

I believe only Martin Gelinas had previously accomplished this feat! Congrats, Stevey!

Holy ****!

What the hell was that thing!?

Is that kind of like selling/losing your soul to get traded inside the Battle of Alberta?

Why is Sutter taking on so many contracts that have more years on them?
Kotalik $3.0M, Hagman $3M, Staios $2.7M.
Add the signing of Stajan and that is another $3.5 next year. If the cap goes down the Flames are fuked in terms of trying to sign a legitimate centerman/top 6 forward.

You can probably forget White now as well.

Dumb trade IMO, I'd rather have Johnson and the $2 million for next year...

Wow, I wasn't expecting to hear that Staios was heading to Calgary of all place. Pretty crazy to hear this is the first trade between these teams, but any mid-season deal between rival teams usually sets up a fairly unusual situation.

Weird to see a trade between thse two. I've always liked Staios though. Should be good for the flames.

Calgary-looking player S.Staios.
But i think Calgary would should to trade/buy different style player, someone playmaker for example.
They have enough toughness already.
The team is even too tough which means too much penalties though.
But if they start playing smartly so then Calgary is tough team to beat.

Quite shocked to see this. Why make a deal with your archenemy?

It's good if it raises some emotion though.
