Oilers Sign Zack Stortini and Carl Corazzini

The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms with forward Zack Stortini on a three-year contract. The club has also agreed to terms with forward Carl Corazzini on a one-year contract.

In his first full season (2007-08) with the Oilers, Stortini recorded 12 points (3-9-12) and 201 penalty minutes in 66 games played. His 201 penalty minutes ranked him fifth in the National Hockey League.

Oilers Vice-President of Hockey Operations Kevin Prendergast says, “Zack had a very productive season last year and we’re looking for him to build from that. He’s an intimidating presence on the ice and is establishing himself as an important part of our hockey club”.

The 6’4”, 220 pound native of Elliot Lake, Ontario, made his NHL debut with the Oilers during the 2006-07 season. Stortini played in 29 games, netting one goal with 101 penalty minutes.

The 22-year-old forward was drafted by the Oilers (3rd round, 94th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. Before joining the Oilers, Stortini played four seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves, registering 120 points (55-65-120) and 746 penalty minutes in 247 career games. After his third season with the Wolves in 2003-04, Stortini made his professional debut, playing in two regular season games and seven playoff games with the Oilers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Roadrunners.

Corazzini is coming off a career season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, recording career-highs in assists (36) and points (60) after collecting 24-36-60 in 80 games played.

Entering his eighth professional season in 2008-09, the Framingham, Massachusetts native has played 19 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins (12 games in 2003-04) and Chicago Blackhawks (7 games in 2006-07), recording three points (2-1-3).

When I saw Zack play in Milwaukee for a half a year I thought there was no way he was going any farther than the A.

Good for him.

Good to see captain Huggy staying around in Edmonton. Very productive for them, and while his fights sucked, he did fight for the right reasons.

At this point, Stortini is better than nothing...

Man this team is soft...

Good character? Have you met Boots? He's not the only criminal NHL owner... What has this league become...

I'm glad they signed Stortini... because even though he isn't the best fighter, he IS better than nothing.

The guy can play the game too and chip in a few points on the 4th-line... he's one of the better enforcers at playing the game of hockey, so that's a plus.

And he can also serve as an agitator WHILE being willing to drop the mitts with the heavyweights, so even though a lot of people on here don't like him - it was a smart move by the Oilers to bring him back.

Like OilersHockey said - anything to toughen that team up... at least they have Stortini and Strudwick to somewhat enforce though.

They aren't totally soft with the likes of Stortini, Strudwick, Souray, Moreau and Staios (and Jacques if he makes it), but they could really use a legit #1 heavy to fight anybody... Stortini and Strudwick will make for a long year in Oil Country in the "gloves off" department...

However, with the addition of a #1 guy, Stortini and Strudwick would make an awesome #2 and #3 combo!

Here's to dreaming...

Stortini, Corazzini, Pisani, Cammalleri, Cogliano...I'll call them the northern mafia of the NHL.
