Oilers Sign Moreau to Four-Year Extension

The Edmonton Oilers have signed assistant captain Ethan Moreau to a four-year contract extension that will run through the 2010-11 season.

Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe says, “We are extremely pleased to have Ethan with us for the long term. Time and again Ethan has proven himself as one of our team’s leaders. His commitment to his teammates and the game can be seen every time he steps on the ice. He was an integral part of the Oilers’ success in last season’s playoff drive and we look forward to his continued leadership.”

Moreau (6’2”, 220 lbs.), who is in his eighth season with the Oilers, scored 11-16-27 with 87 penalty minutes in 74 games with Edmonton in 2005-06. He was second on the Oilers with a +6 ranking and was among the NHL leaders in shorthanded scoring. The left winger scored 4-3-7 on the penalty kill to lead the Oilers and finish third in the NHL in shorthanded scoring. He was eighth in shorthanded goals and sixth in assists.

In 469 games since joining the Oilers in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on March 20, 1999, Moreau has scored 83-75-158 with 538 PIM. He has 116-107-223 with 822 PIM in 679 career NHL games.

This guy is the heart and soul of the team. Good move to lock him up for a few more years of hard-nosed hockey.

It will be a sad day when Moreau, Smyth, or Smith finally leave edmonton...

I'm glad to see the extension... you CANNOT replace a guy like Moreau.

Good character? Have you met Boots? He's not the only criminal NHL owner... What has this league become...
