Oilers Sign Matt Greene to Two-Year Contract
The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Matt Greene to a two-year contract.
The 6’3”, 223-pound native of Grand Ledge, Michigan is coming off his first full NHL season in 2006-07. The 24-year-old defenceman scored 1-9-10 with 109 penalty minutes in 78 games to establish single-season career-highs in games, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes. Greene led the Oilers in penalty minutes and was second in both hits (135) and blocked shots (143). Following the season, Greene was selected to Team USA for the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Moscow, where he recorded two assists and was +4 in seven games, helping the Americans to a fifth place finish. Greene began his professional career with the Oilers in 2005-06, splitting the season between Edmonton and the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League. He tallied two assists with 43 penalty minutes in 27 games for the Oilers during his rookie season and then added one assist in 18 playoff games as Edmonton advanced to the Stanley Cup Final. Greene has scored 1-11-12 with 152 penalty minutes in 105 career NHL games as an Oiler.

This guy is a good young defenseman. He's got some skill and some toughness, and in the future he should fill in nicely for former captain, Jason Smith. I know all the Oilers fans are excited about this kid, so it's good that they signed him to an extension. And in 2 years, they will probably sign him to an even longer extension. Edmonton's team isn't looking the best right now, and Greene is one of the few bright spots on their roster.
