Oilers Sign Joffrey Lupul for Three Years

The Edmonton Oilers have signed right wing Joffrey Lupul to a three-year contract.

Lupul, a 6’1”, 200-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, enters his first season with the Oilers and third in the NHL. Drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, the 22-year-old forward enjoyed his most productive season in 2005-06, scoring 28-25-53 with 48 penalty minutes in 81 games with Anaheim. He finished the season fourth in scoring on the Anaheim roster and established career-highs in goals, assists, points, powerplay goals (12) and shorthanded goals (2).

He made history during the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs as he scored four goals in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Colorado Avalanche, becoming the first player in NHL history to score four goals in a playoff game, including the overtime winner. He netted 9-2-11 in 16 playoff games with Anaheim before being eliminated in the Western Conference final by the Oilers. His nine goals led the Mighty Ducks and placed him third in the NHL.

Lupul made his NHL debut with Anaheim in 2003-04 and scored 13-21-34 in 75 games. He was ranked among the NHL rookie leaders that season, finishing tied for sixth in points, ninth in goals and fifth in assists. His 21 assists tied the Mighty Ducks record for most assists by a rookie in one season and his 13 goals and 34 points were the second highest totals by a rookie in Anaheim history, second only to Paul Kariya’s 18-21-39 in 1994-95.

He has scored 41-46-87 with 76 PIM in 156 career NHL games and has 9-2-11 in 16 playoff games.

A member of the Canadian National Junior Team that won the silver medal at the 2003 IIHF World Championship, Lupul came to the Oilers on July 3rd, along with Ladislav Smid and draft choices, in exchange for Chris Pronger.

Pansies. Charles Wang would have signed him for 17.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.
