Oilers Deal Andrew Cogliano to Anaheim

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have acquired a second round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for forward Andrew Cogliano.

The acquired pick now gives Edmonton eight selections in the 2013 Entry Draft.

Cogliano, 24, was drafted by Edmonton in the 1st round, 25th overall, in 2005. In 328 career games with the Oilers, the Toronto, Ontario native had 146 points (57G, 89A).

Having watching a lot of Oilers games, I thought the gap between Cogliano and Sam Gagner wasn't that far, but being a fairly high pick seemed to get Gagner the big minutes. Cogliano did a lot more without the puck, but what really plagued him is when he got a good scoring chance, he couldn't finish to save his life the last few years.

He's a small guy but fast as hell. What's unbelievable is that he hasn't missed a single game in four years as an Oiler, whereas everyone else seems to miss a quarter of the season every year.

With the Belanger signing, the writing was on the wall, he was done here. Didn't think Edmonton would get a 2nd but I think Cogs definitely has 20 goals in him. Good deal for both teams.

Even up against the cap as far as they are...I really wish Philly coulda got this kid. A 2nd for Cogs IMO is a steal. Edmonton just didn't use this kid correctly.

Thank god it wasn't LA. I thought for sure when I first saw this, "Oilers Deal Andrew Cog", I thought it was LA.

I know the Oilers has been trying to get rid of him for a while and I am very happy it isn't the Kings that are getting him.

Ducks needed 3rd line help.

I don't mind the 2nd round price.

They are becoming more of a speed team than a physical team. (other than the 1st and 4th lines)

Cogliano-McMillan-Sexton

Could be the fastest line in the league.

He's been quoted in other trade rumors saying he doesn't want to be traded, but I think it's for the best. He still has alot of potential and Edmonton was gonna be a tough place to pick up playing time over their ton of high quality prospects. Change of scenery does him good i hope.

Really believe Cogliano was rushed into the NHL too soon and would have been better off with another year in junior and maybe 1 more in the minors. Instead, a desperate Oiler team rushed him into the lineup and despite a decent rookie season his numbers and goal totals have dipped nearly every year since. He showed signs of bouncing back last season, but to me Cogliano perfectly epitomizes what can happen to a promising prospect if he's rushed in to the NHL too soon in his career. Expectations for both him and Gagner may have been too high on that team as well.

Regardless - fresh start for him in Anahiem - be interesting to see what kind of effect the move will have on his numbers.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Oilers gave up on Cogliano. Sure he was not as productive as anticipated, but with all the kids the team was bound to go through growing pains regardless.

I'll go out on a limb and say with the Ducks...Cogliano nets 25 minimum this coming season. I really believe the Oilers made a huge mistake here.

Nice move for the Ducks.

If Cogliano isn't going to score he'll be the perfect replacement for Todd Marchant later or sooner. IMO they are very similar players.

BTW a Cogliano Palmieri line could be fun in Anaheim.

Cogliano is a good player... but he just can't seem to finish

it works out decent tho.. edmonton opens up one more roster spot and gets some cap room and a second round pick and the ducks get a good player with lots of potential in Cogliano..

Long term Edmonton will probably regret it but it opens up a chance for more prospects

He can't finish to save his life.

He can't win a faceoff to save his life.

What line would you use him on? He's been tried everywhere...

The reason he is still in the NHL is that he is literally in the top 10 fastest skaters in the league...

I can't believe they got a 2nd straight up for the kid... he isn't worth a 1st, that's for sure. Best deal on the table in years I think.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

My thoughts exactly.

His lack of finishing was, at times, comical. Besides Antii Mietinen, I can't think of a guy that missed the open net more.

With his speed, if he put on a bit more weight and played more physical, he could be one hell of a 3rd line checking center.

IF IF IF he could learn to win a draw. That's the single greatest reason he is being traded - the Oilers couldn't win a faceoff among them last year, and culprit number 1 was Cogs... In come Belanger, out goes problem #1
