Oilers Agree to Terms with Horcoff on Three-Year Deal

The Edmonton Oilers and centre Shawn Horcoff have agreed to a three-year contract.

With the deal, the Oilers and the 6’1”, 204 pound forward from Castlegar, British Columbia have avoided arbitration.

The Oilers’ third choice in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Horcoff is coming off his most productive NHL season in 2005-06. The 27-year-old forward almost doubled his previous single-season scoring totals as he established career highs in goals, assists and points with 22-51-73 in 79 games to finish as the Oilers’ second leading scorer.

Horcoff’s 51 assists placed him second on the Oilers’ roster and he was third in goals, reaching the 20-goal milestone for the first time. He was also second in penalty minutes with a career-high 85.

He led the Oilers with five game-winning goals, including one in overtime, and had three powerplay and three shorthanded goals. Along with his three shorthanded goals, he added three shorthanded assists to finish the season tied for eighth place in the NHL in shorthanded points.

The five-year NHL veteran was also instrumental in Edmonton’s Oilers Stanley Cup Playoff run that saw the Oilers advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since the 1989-90 season. In 24 playoff games, Horcoff scored 7-12-19 with 12 PIM to finish second on the Oilers scoring list and tied for fourth in the NHL post-season scoring race. Scoring points in 15 of 24 games, he was involved in five of the Oilers’ 15 playoff victories, scoring two game winners and adding three game-winning assists.

Through his first five seasons with the Oilers, Horcoff has scored 66-118-184 with 241 PIM in 347 career games.

One down, three to go (Stoll, Lupul, Hemsky)

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

i really like this guy, but that's a lot of money. I don't think he contributed to much in the playoffs either with the line that he was on

all and all good signing, Oil's have money and need to get as many guys back as possible

The first thing that jumped out at me was the amount of money. Horcoff is not worth 3.5 a year right now...
