Oilers Acquire Yan Stastny from Boston

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Yan Stastny from the Boston Bruins in exchange for the Bruins' 4th round draft choice in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, which had been previously acquired by Edmonton in the August 1st trade for Brad Isbister.

Following the trade, the Oilers and Stastny came to an agreement on a two-year contract. Stastny will report to the Oilers Rookie Camp, which opens on September 5th.

The 5'11", 195 pound, forward is the son of Hockey Hall of Famer Peter Stastny, who played 15 NHL seasons with Quebec, New Jersey and St. Louis from 1980-81 to 1994-95.

Drafted by Boston in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Stastny has played the last two seasons with the Nurnberg Ice Tigers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), scoring 33-50-83 with 143 PIM in 95 games.

This past season saw the 22-year-old native of Quebec City finished tied for fourth place in the DEL scoring race with 54 points, scoring 24 goals and 30 assists in 51 games, while registering 60 penalty minutes.

Prior to playing in Germany, Stastny played two seasons of collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame. He scored 20-20-40 with 82 PIM in 72 games with the Fighting Irish from 2001-02 to 2002-03.

With that lastname he cant be bad....

I guess he went late in the draft because of his size and lack of talent. Im curious what the Oliers see in him that Boston missed?

Yan Stastny was the best overall player in the DEL last season. Well maybe Mike York was better, but Stastny played very good in every situation.
Most people in Germany said he is too good already for the DEL and maybe ready to play in the NHL. Don't know why Boston traded him.

I've heard good things about him, but you won't convince me yet he's worth Brad Isbister

Oh well... I'll count my losses.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

He is a very good Player and also very young with a lot of talent, but no way something like "the best player"-
You didn't see anything from him in the PlayOffs.

Maybe not the best player, but he was for sure top-5 material, and he is just 22 years old.
