NHL Suspends Islanders' Gillies for 10 Games

TORONTO -- New York Islanders forward Trevor Gillies has been suspended for 10 games and will forfeit $60,975.60 in salary for delivering a blow to the head of Cal Clutterbuck of the Minnesota Wild in NHL game #954, March 2, the National Hockey League announced today.

The incident occurred at 2:23 of the second period and Gillies was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.

“By targeting his opponent's head, three shifts into his first game back from a suspension for a very similar action, Mr. Gillies has forfeited his privilege of playing in the League for 10 games,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. “While it is fortunate there was no injury on the play, there can be no justification for a player delivering a dangerous check to an opponent in this manner".

Gillies, who was suspended for nine games on Feb. 11, is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Gillies will miss the Islanders’ next 10 games and be eligible to return March 26 against Philadelphia.

The NHL really needs to cut the ****. Clutterbuck drilled his teammate on the numbers with a blatant hit from behind. Clutterbuck claims he wasn't feeling well after the game yet takes a massive run later in the game at the same guy he drilled from behind...he was clearly fine. If the refs called it right, this never would've been an issue, there is no accountibility for anyone.

The NHL is a ****ing joke now. Hopefully this satisfies Milbury and the Pansy bunch now.

10 games for that!? i understand that hes a repeat offender. but, its turning into a situation thats getting out of control. does this set the bar for a 10 gamer, or just cause it's gillies? (i know its cause it gillies, but im trying to prove a point)

That's all you can really say about this.

Talk about a league having it out for a player. This incident brings that statement to epic proportions.

If by "comments" you actually mean "hot load in Bettman's eagerly awaiting mouth", then you are probably correct.

In all honesty I'm surprised he didn't get more. I'm not saying I think he should have gotten more just saying I thought they were gonna tell him to start golfing early.

10 games is a JOKE, sure he just finished screwing up and he in their eye did it again. However this play would go uncalled if it were many other players in the league.

I have been a fan of hockey my whole life, and I never remembered this amount of favoritism. Slowly the NHL is becoming a joke. Hockey players were always the toughest in any sport, playing through anything they could and doing it with a smile. Now we have players that look like they belong in soccer.

Why are people complaining about it? I personally thought it was going to be a lot worse. Cal Clutterbuck played the wounded animal after getting hit, so it gets played over and over on TV. Hell, half the time they showed the hit they failed to show Clutterbuck's boarding penalty. Of course he's getting suspended, and they gave him 1 game more then the last. Thankfully they didn't listen to everyone saying "suspend him for a season" or "get him out of the league!"

Regardless of the circumstances and if you feel he was doing his job or not. He hit a guy high and taunted him from the tunnel and made national news. He gets suspended for 9 games. In his first game back he hits a guy in the same fashion who writhes on the ice like he's shot and again is put into highlight shows everywhere. What could we possible expect to happen? One game more then the last... sounds good to me. Whether what Gillies did was warrented or not is irrelevent, you can't just come back from a suspension and do the same thing.

The NerdyHypocritaldLosers just lost my support for as long as I can hold out. No Center Ice package, road trip games, merchandise etc etc Done it before(after the lost season)and will feel proud to do it again. These weirdos are making 2012 feel true.

The problem with this post is that he didn't do the "same thing". In fact, the video shows it wasn't even close.
