NHL Suspends Brad Staubitz for Remainder of Preseason and Three Regular-Season Games

NEW YORK -- Minnesota Wild forward Brad Staubitz has been suspended for the remainder of the preseason and for three regular-season games for an illegal hit from behind to Columbus forward Cody Bass during a preseason game on September 23, NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Staubitz will forfeit $9,324.33. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

At 4:24 of the third period, Staubitz hit Bass from behind and into the glass. Bass was injured on the play. Staubitz was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for checking from behind.

Staubitz missed the Sept. 24 preseason game at Pittsburgh and will miss preseason games Tuesday vs. St. Louis, Thrusday at Columbus and Friday vs. Edmonton. He also will miss regular-season games Oct. 8 vs. Columbus, Oct. 10 at the New York Islanders and Oct. 11 at Ottawa. He will be eligible to return Oct. 13 vs. Edmonton.

That was a bad hit. Suspension was definitely warranted.

On a side note, that hit was bad. Kassian can rep the benefits.

All of this is becoming a bit too ridiculous for my liking. Bad hits or not. .

Some sort of action was warranted for the hit but the video deposition from Shanny is utterly ridiculous, this is quickly becoming a freak show.

for about a week or so. Though the Wild have a very tight camp right now.

Ok, I'll buy this was a suspension-worthy hit, but I would have only given 2 games at most, even with Staubitz having record. I still don't think the league is really factoring in preseason games (except apparently for Brad Boyes, who shouldn't have been suspended anyway) in determining suspension length because no money is forfeited by the player during the preseason. Seems like a bit of an overcall, but could have been worse.

And while I'm not enjoying all the media praise Shanahan gets as a result of these videos for a suspension-happy preseason, I actually do think they're not a bad idea. We never had any clue what Colin Campbell (wasn't) thinking when he handed out discipline, and the rare times he explained himself on camera he came off like a complete and total idiot. So at least Shanahan is explaining the reasoning going into the decision, even if we may not agree with it.

Definitely worthy of a suspension. I cannot stand the blatant hits from behind, and as many guys sitting out as it takes before they all get it, the better. They put the freaking boarding and checking from behind penalties in the rulebook for a reason. Is someone going to have to have his career ended or worse before it finally sinks in?

Shanahan is taking over like a greedy executive.

I think he needs to start talking more slowly for players to understand him better. They appear to be that dumb.

Incredibly reckless, stupid, and dangerous hit by Staubitz. There's no defending this one. He's lucky he didn't get more.
