NHL Fines Sabres Head Coach Ron Rolston for Team Conduct

NEW YORK -- Buffalo Sabres head coach Ron Rolston has been fined for player selection and team conduct as a result of events that took place at 10:01 of the third period during NHL preseason game No. 61 against the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto on Sunday, Sept. 22.

The events took place during the face-off after Buffalo forward Corey Tropp fought Toronto forward Jamie Devane. Buffalo forward John Scott initiated an altercation with Toronto forward Phil Kessel, whom he was lined up against on the face-off, resulting in several fights. In total, 211 penalty minutes, including three game misconducts, were assessed due to the various altercations.

way to go nhl...fine a coach for putting players out on the ice like they should have. it wasn't rolston who told john scott to go after kessel, it was john scott's choice to threaten to beat kessel into the ice.

just another dumb knee-jerk move by the league

Last time I checked John Scott was an nhl player. Coach should be able to put out whoever he wants...

Wow.. that's pretty unbelievable I didn't even know the NHL could fine someone for that? How does this make any sense at all? Does that mean anytime a single player does something wild his coach is going to get fined for putting him on the ice? Scott was pretty much by himself for that brawl, I mean some Sabre got bloodied up by Phil Kessel is that not enough proof that the players sent out weren't some kind of goon squad?

This is absolutely ridiculous I can't even believe it's real.

Leafs should be fined for "player selection" for keeping Pogge over Rask... and the Raycroft trade. And Jeff Finger.

The Sabres should be fined for losing a line brawl with John Scott on their side. Seriously, Phil ****ing Kessel had his way with the Buffalo Sabres.

"Player selection" what a load of ****. If their in the coach's dressed lineup they should be utilized anyway the coach wants them to be.

So does the league actually have jurisdiction on what players are allowed to send out fight invites? Doesn't this horse**** ruling essentially prove the NHL is prejudiced against "enforcers"?

Bull****. Wasn't Scott already on the ice when the Devane-Tropp fight happened? How can you fine a coach for letting a player finish his shift? Unless they have clear evidence that Rolston specifically told Scott to attack Kessel the league is way out of line with this fine.

Colin Campbell was more competent than this dope, and that's saying something. The NHL's integrity is the biggest embarrassment in professional sports.

Not only was Scott already on the ice, he was on ice BEFORE Kessel, and had already played 8 minutes in the game. Almost a regular shift...Lol.

While there is a rule where coaches can be fined for instigating in the last five minutes, this happened around the 10 minute mark.

The ownership of Buffalo needs to step up and take issue with the NHL making up a rule here.
