NHL Fines Predators' Richard Clune $1,452.70 for Boarding
NEW YORK -- Nashville Predators forward Rich Clune has been fined $1,452.70, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for boarding Colorado Avalanche forward Aaron Palushaj in NHL Game No. 221 in Colorado on Monday, February 18, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.
The incident occurred at 12:32 of the first period. Clune was assessed a minor penalty for boarding. As a first-time offender, the maximum Clune could be fined was the lesser of $10,000 or one-half of his daily salary. The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. |

I blame Palushaj for the result. I guess $1452.70 is half Clune's daily pay then? Still better off than he was getting riding the busses and dropping the gloves over 100 times over the last 5 1/2 years.

Honestly, players putting themselves in a vulnerable position needs to be addressed. This looks like a typical boarding penalty, nothing the league should have looked into. If they continue to fine players for a minor penalty, everybody is going to become a "repeat offender".

...ALL these bogus fines and suspensions are almost laughable. Far TOO MANY of Brendan Shanahan's rulings are unjustified and quite simply off-the-mark.
Any blatant, dangerous violations SHOULD be dealt with harshly, for sure -- no question about it,...but, he goes overboard, more often than not, in his disciplinary decisions. If "minor" boarding, elbowing, charging, high-sticking, cross-checking penalties are so offensive that they must be followed-up with Shanahan's obligatory fines and suspensions,....then call them what they are --- MAJORS. The NHL needs to appoint someone to the job of "director of player safety" that is better qualified. Slowly but surely the physical-play in hockey is being phased-out,.... |
