NHL Fines Mark Giordano $10,000 for Slew-Footing
NEW YORK - Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano has been fined $10,000, the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for slew-footing Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel in NHL Game No. 215 in Dallas on Sunday, February 17, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.
As defined by NHL Rule 52: "Slew-footing is the act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent's feet from under him, or pushes an opponent's upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent's feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice." The incident occurred at 11:53 of the second period. Giordano was assessed a minor penalty for tripping. As a first-time offender, the maximum Giordano could be fined was the lesser of $10,000 or one-half of his daily salary. The fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. Such a vagina move. Glad the league actually caught this one.

...has their been ANY mention of possible disciplinary action to the referee who whistled a MATCH penalty on A. Desjardins for his hit on Chicago's J. Mayers ( Feb. 05 )?....the call was later RESCINDED after the game --- AFTER the game!
A well-timed, perfectly executed, absolutely legit, text-book, CLEAN check was penalized as a "hit to the head" -- MATCH penalty -- for the remainder of the game, do you REALLY think any player was going to play physical after witnessing THAT call? I understand the NHL ( Brendan Shanahan -- commander of discipline ) is on a crusade to "clean-up" hockey -- but, these calls ( which are only made for fear of NOT making a call ) only serve to ruin the sport. Take appropriate action against the blatant and dangerous illegalities that take place -- of course!,.....but, BE MINDFULL of the phasing-out of physical-play that will most assuredly happen through "over-officiating",... |

Is this slew foot really that much different than Skinner's slew foot that (as far as I know) didn't even get looked at by the league?
I agree that this fine was necessary, but I would have loved the same thing to have happened to Skinner. |

For the record, I think the Giordano slew foot is much worse. He completely kicked out Roussel's skates and dumped him on the back of his head.

If you re-watch what happened (In the Giordano slew-foot), he didn't actually hit the back of his head on anything. He more landed on his shoulder than anything.
I actually feel as though Bergeron fell harder than Roussel. The only thing that I can see that is worse about Giordano's slew-foot than Skinner's is the positioning of where it happened. Giordano's was closer to the boards, making it more likely that Roussel's leg would get caught between the boards and Giordano. Other than that, they are both slew-foots, and should have receive AT LEAST a fine. If not a one (or more) game suspension. *Edit* I do agree that Skinner is definitely one of those players that won't get touched by the league unless he kills someone. It still bothers me though. |
