Montador Signs Four-Year Deal After Trade to Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to terms with defenseman Steve Montador (MAWN-tuh-dor) on a four-year contract.

Montador, 31, registered a career-high 21 assists and 26 points (5G, 21A) and paced the Buffalo Sabres with a career-best +16 plus/minus rating in 73 regular-season games during the 2010-11 campaign. The blueliner led the club with 136 blocked shots and paced team defensemen with 86 penalty minutes while collecting one assist in six Stanley Cup Playoffs contests.

The Vancouver native, who was originally acquired by the Blackhawks on June 29 from Buffalo, has recorded 28 goals, 89 assists and 762 penalty minutes in 519 regular-season tilts over parts of nine NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames (2001-06), Florida Panthers (2005-08), Anaheim Ducks (2008-09), Boston Bruins (2009) and Sabres (2009-11). He has tallied eight points, a +11 rating and 36 penalty minutes in 43 career Stanley Cup Playoffs games, including a run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final with Calgary.

Maybe there is hope in Edmonton? Finally, a guy in charge who doesn't believe Lennart Petrell is a legitimate roster player.

Not really. Robyn Regehr is tougher than Montador.

But regehr doesnt fight even close to as much as montador will

if the hawks could sign him, this would be sweet to add some grit to our weakass defense

Yeah, but they had them both until now. Subtract Monty and add Ehroff (maybe) and the toughness declines.

Wait a second......Montador has a bad win-loss record the past few seasons and he only had 3 fights this past season. So how did the Sabres lose toughness? Please answer in paragraph form covering all of my questions and in due time.....that it unless your going to cower with your tail between your legs.

I'm thinking he means toughness as in just being physical, not so much in his fighting.

I wouldn't mind him as a Blackhawk.

I was being sarcastic giving Jack a taste of his own medicine. In all honesty I'd love to have Montador back he is fairly agile and he does play pretty physical. Good pickup for the Hawks.

Not the toughest of players but a real team player. I like. Will probably have about 10 fights and lose about 8-9 of them but this is much better then what we got now toghnesswise.

I guess the sabres are going to sign Weber instead. Montador's a solid D-man, but his physical play has greatly diminished. Last year he started to wear a visor and stopped fighting for most of the season. He should still add a little toughness to the blackhawks.

So what if we lose him? Ehrhoff is def a better hockey player than he is and i dont care about the toughness part because monty almost NEVER wins a fight
