Milan Lucic Suspended One Game for Hit on Zac Rinaldo

NEW YORK – Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic has been suspended, without pay, for one game for checking Philadelphia Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo from behind during NHL Game #466 in Philadelphia on Saturday, Dec. 17, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Lucic will forfeit $22,072.07. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 16:21 of the second period. A major penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct was assessed on the play.

Lucic will miss tonight’s game vs. Montreal. He will be eligible to return Dec. 23 vs. Florida.

I see this as a combination attempt to settle his game down a little, make up for the Miller incident, and appease the anti-Bruin masses and conspiracy theorists. Really, I didn't think the hit was that bad and the major he got was probably enough punishment, but take into account all the other stuff and its no wonder he got the 1 game. Politics, man, politics.

For the hit alone, no. Taking all the above into account - sure, I'm ok with it, I can see where they might be coming from. Its only 1 game, and he is a Bruin, after all! .

Why not ban him? I mean a hit from behind can potentially cause death.

It sounds silly but that's where it will go if we adopt this "I can see where they are comind from idea" too often.

In all honesty I don't think it was that bad. I think it was just a split second reaction kind of thing and Lucic realized he f*cked up right away which is why his mind looked to be elsewhere when Simmonds came calling.

That being said, I don't like Lucic's comments after the game where he played all innocent and claimed he didn't see numbers. Freeze the video between :02 and :03 and that's clearly bullsh*t. Rinaldo was squarely face first when he zoomed in and only just began to turn away from the boards when he got ran into.
