Matt Carkner Suspended One Game

NEW YORK - Ottawa Senators forward Matt Carkner has been suspended for one game for continuing to inflict punishment upon an opponent who was an unwilling combatant in an altercation during Game 2 of the team's Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with the New York Rangers in New York on Saturday, April 14, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Carkner instigated an altercation with New York forward Brian Boyle, who did not respond. After knocking Boyle to the ice with two punches, Carkner continued to throw punches at his opponent, who was an unwilling combatant. Carkner's actions classified him as an "aggressor" under NHL rules.

The incident occurred at 2:15 of the first period. Carkner was assessed a minor penalty for instigating, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

Isn't that what the instigator penalty was created for? Total crap. Where does it say he should be suspended the next game? Am I missing something?

46.11 Instigator - An instigator of an altercation shall be a player who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria: distance traveled; gloves off first; first punch thrown; menacing attitude or posture; verbal instigation or threats; conduct in retaliation to a prior game (or season) incident; obvious retribution for a previous incident in the game or season.

A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a ten-minute misconduct.

If the same player or goalkeeper is deemed to be the instigator of a second altercation in the same game, he shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting and a game misconduct.

When a player receives his third instigator penalty in one Regular season, he is automatically given a game misconduct following that third violation.

A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

If anything it was the refs' fault for just standing there letting Carkner wail away on Boyle. And I guess an enforcer is no longer allowed to do his job.

Stupid. Its essentially a 2 game suspension since he was kicked out so early of the last game. But oh well. At least Ottawa still has Neil and Konopka if things start up again.

During the Play-offs, any player who is deemed to be the aggressor for the second time shall be suspended automatically for the next Play-off game of his team. For each subsequent aggressor violation during the Play-offs, the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.

Prior to the commencement of each Stanley Cup Final, a player or goalkeeper will have his current aggressor violations removed from his current playoff record. They will remain part of his historical record.

I know its not their role, but i found it funny seeing the ref casually leaning against the boards watching Carkner unload for a good couple of seconds

I've posted about this play in multiple other threads, but I'll just reiterate. This is an awful ruling, even if it's only 1 game.

While it's not that common of an occurrence, as NJDevils17 posted, this sort of thing happens in hockey from time to time. For a variety of reasons, guys get jumped and punches continue to be thrown while one guy is in a vulnerable position int he ice. Sure it looks ugly to the outsider who doesn't watch the sport regularly, but it happens from time to time. And yet, I never remember a guy getting suspended for it.

Carkner put his team shorthanded for a full 5 minutes in a playoff game, and was ejected from the game. That's a pretty stiff penalty that hurt his whole team. I see no reason to punish him further when there's no precedent for doing so.

i totally agree this is a joke the zebras this year have been inconstant and just plain horrible all year and they seem to be kicking it up a notch for the playoffs and shanahan is making it worse with these stupid suspensions this is a joke

that is what the penalty is for however you are not allowed to stand over your opponent and continue to pound on him
