Maple Leafs Sign Paul Ranger to One-Year Contract

David Nonis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Wednesday that the hockey club has signed defenceman Paul Ranger to a one-year contract.

Ranger, 28, played in 51 games in his first season with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies in 2012-13. He scored eight goals and added 17 assists. He posted a plus 16 mark with 54 minutes in penalties and 10 of his points came on the powerplay (4g, 6a).

Ranger played in 270 regular season games for the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2005 to 2009. He registered 18 goals, 74 assists and 92 points along with 218 penalty minutes. The 6-3, 210-pound defenceman’s best season offensively came in 2007-08 when he collected 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists) in 72 games. In 11 career playoff games with the Lightning, he earned two goals and five assists with four penalty minutes. The Whitby, Ontario native also represented the Eastern Conference at the 2007 NHL YoungStars Game in Dallas.

Ranger was originally Tampa Bay’s seventh choice, selected 183rd overall, in the 2002 Entry Draft.

Good signing. He earned a contract after being one of the Marlies' best d-men last year, after being out of the game a few years. I guess this means Franson is going to be gone?

Just curious, has Fraser re-signed with yet?

He's going to arbitration.

Good, cheap signing. There was talk earlier in the summer that most teams in the league were trying to sign him and that the Oilers were the favourites to land him so I'm a little surprised Nonis was able to get him on such a small deal.

Do we know why he semi-retired a couple of years ago? I don't need every detail of his personal life, but if the answer is out there, I'd kinda like to know.

Yeah, I honestly thought he was just putting on a display with the Marlies for a big signing but, Ranger ain't about the money. Love this guy

He'll re-sign, don't worry, Nilan. And he's going to smash Prust's head in again, you can count on that too.

What was deal with that? Was it ever made public? If it was a depression/anxiety thing he is going to hang himself in a hockey made city like Toronto.

Who cares? Did you lose any sleep over it? Did it harm Tampa's Stanley Cup chances?

I can understand Lightning fans not liking him. Obviously him leaving didn't cost them a cup or anything but it would still suck to lose a good young player for nothing and then have him pop up again with another team a few years later. I'd probably be pissed too if it happened with Jake Gardiner or Cody Franson.
