Maple Leafs Sign Goaltender Joey MacDonald
Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the hockey club has signed free agent goaltender Joey MacDonald to a one-year contract.
“We are pleased to be able to add a goaltender of Joey’s caliber to our roster,” said Burke. “He brings experience and character to our organization and gives us depth at the goaltending position.” MacDonald, 29, registered a 14-26-6 record, one shutout, a 3.37 goals against average and a .901 save percentage in 49 games with the New York Islanders last season. He started 17 consecutive games from November 3 to December 8 and was named the NHL's "Third Star of the Month" for November after leading all goaltenders in games (14), minutes (842) and shots faced (439), and sharing the lead in wins (8). The 6-0, 197-pound goaltender has appeared in 66 career NHL games with the Islanders, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings, posting a record of 17-34-9 with a 3.31 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. During the 2002-03 season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, MacDonald and teammate Marc Lamothe won the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Trophy which is awarded annually to the team with the lowest goals against average. In 202 career AHL games, MacDonald has notched a 104-76-4 record, 18 shutouts, a 2.47 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. A native of Pictou, Nova Scotia, MacDonald was originally signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings on January 15, 2002. Last edited by Thrillhouse; 08-10-2009 at 07:48 PM. |

MacDonald is a solid #3 goalie. I'm guessing the Leafs are looking for that Gustavsson guy to serve as Toskala's backup this season? If not, I guess him and MacDonald will battle for the opportunity. The guy played very well early last season with the Islanders playing in place of the injured DiPietro, before he seemed to wear down from starting pretty much every game.
And, this adds even more organizational toughness for Toronto this offseason:

It makes the Pogge trade make sense.
MacDonald gives the Marlies more wins than Pogge if he plays in the AHL and he has proven that he can do stints in the NHL. Looks like Burke wants into the playoffs this year. |

You know it's funny now that I see these clips I realize in the past 15 years or so of watching the Petes play the only goalie I've seen fight was Joey, against Derek Dolson of Oshawa. There have been some other scrums where goalies might have gotten a bit involved, but that's the only one I can remember where the goalies met up a center and took the masks off and fought. In addition Joey was an outstanding goalie and was one of the most popular players to have played for the Petes in recent years. |

MacDonald is a solid goalie. He stood on his head in that one game against Detroit was sensational. .901 save percentage isn't bad especially being on the worst team in the league last year.

Plus I have this feeling that Burke will wait until some team gets in injury trouble on defence and add a top 6 forward for a defencemen and/or combination of players. He has the depth at defence to make a deal. |

Lol, he'd be the toughest guy on Detroits roster.
I believe in one of the last 2 seasons he had 3 FM's, it beat the guys on Detroit last year.

That's just the way it's going to go." |

Maybe the Leafs picked up MacDonald as insurance in case "the Monster" becomes a nightmare for them. Joey Mac is an upgrade over Pogge regardless of where he plays. I would like to see him get a fair shot in camp but with all the hype over the Swede, Joey probably starts the season in the A.
