Maple Leafs Sign Four

John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the club has signed restricted free agent defencemen Brendan Bell and Jay Harrison to one year contracts. He also announced that defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo and forward Kris Newbury have accepted the club’s qualifying offer for the 2006-07 season.

Colaiacovo was Toronto’s first pick, 17th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Bell and Harrison were Toronto’s third and fourth picks that same year going 65th and 82nd overall. Newbury signed with Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent on October 2, 2003 and was originally San Jose’s fourth pick, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Good news here. Colaiacovo seemed to get better every time he took the ice, and as long as he doesn't have any lingering concussion issues he's a solid number 5. As for Harrison, from what I've read he's a tough kid, and contributes offensively, so hopefully he'll end up the number 6. As for Newbury, granted I'm solely basing this on stats, but I don't see how he wasn't playing over Ondrus. He had 60 points in 74 games, as opposed to 30 in 53 for Ondrus, and he drops the gloves as much or more.

We better hope Carlo turns out to be higher than a #5 guy. But as far as this season is concerned, he'll probably be #5...maybe #4 when Gill doesn't pan out

I like Harrison. He's gonna have to battle it out with White, Bell, Kronwall and Woz for the last spot (assuming Carlo has #5 wrapped up...and he should).

Newbury will get his chance this season once the injury bug hits.

Carlo doesn't have to worry, Bure retired. Plus I doubt he makes the leafs, only sparingly called up. He's still note even 100% is he? Very close though.
