Lightning Sign Sami Salo

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed free agent defenseman Sami Salo to a two-year contract today, vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced.

Salo, 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, has played in 761 career NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators. He has accumulated 93 goals, 305 points, 55 power-play goals and 24 game-winning goals. Salo has played for Vancouver since the 2002-03 season. He has played in 100 career Stanley Cup Playoff games with both the Canucks and Senators, recording 12 goals and 31 points. Salo was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team in 1999.

A native of Turku, Finland, Salo played in 69 games with Vancouver last season, recording nine goals and 25 points with a plus-7 rating. He led all Canucks defensemen in power-play goals with seven, ranked second for goals and fourth for average ice time with 20:26 per contest.

The 37-year-old represented Finland in each of the previous three Olympic Games.

Salo was drafted by Ottawa in the ninth round, 239th overall, of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He was acquired by the Canucks on September 21, 20002 in exchange for Peter Schaefer.

A hefty price tag for a guy guaranteed to miss half the season due to injury.

At least this broken down euro contract is only 2 years. Rumor mill is Ohlund will never play again.

This team did run around like idiots annoying and beating the Bruins after that happened, the Lightning on the other hand would literally not do anything AND lose.

Everyone can say what they want about Salo, as he is always hurt, but after taking a Duncan Keith slap shot in the sac a few years ago in the playoffs and getting rushed to the hospital because of it, he would come back to play after taking the needle and only missing one game. It was painful just typing that, and the guy will always have my respect just based on the balls(pardon the pun) that he showed by playing so soon..... or even at all. I'd probably still be crying about an injury like that.
Needless to say, he's at the top of my list for toughest players in the league, just a different form of toughness than what this site usually talks about. That dudes a MAN!!!

As a Nucks fan, although it got old seeing him hurt all of the time, he was a very good, honest player for the Nucks and IMO was very under rated.
