Lightning Deal Andrej Meszaros to Philadelphia

The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired a second round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft today in exchange for defenseman Andrej Meszaros, Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman announced.

Meszaros, 6-foot-2, 223 pounds, is a veteran of 379 career NHL games with Tampa Bay and the Ottawa Senators, recording 34 goals, 14 power-play goals and 143 points with a career plus-6 rating. He was acquired by the Lightning on August 29, 2008 in exchange for defensemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard as well as a first-round pick in 2009.

The native of Povazska Bystrica, Slovakia has played in 133 games with Tampa Bay, recording eight goals, three power-play goals and 33 points with a minus-18 rating. He averaged 24:10 in ice time in 2008-09 and 20:10 in 2009-10.

Last season Meszaros registered six goals and 17 points in 81 games with the Lightning. He ranked second on the team among defensemen with six goals and was third with 17 points.

Meszaros was drafted by Ottawa in the first round, 23rd overall, of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

That's an understatement. This is an AWESOME salary dump for Yzerman. Get a 2nd rounder in return for losing Meszaros and his salary? Bravo Stevie Y, bravo.

Great deal. Meszaros is a suitcase full of used pucks.

Will someone please fire Maguire. He thinks he's knowledgable, but he's a tool. Meszaros played as a 20 yr old with the Vancouver Giants, not the Ottawa Senators as he said. FUUUUCK OFFFFFFFF

Wasn't Meszaros a pretty good defensmen before going to Tampa? Pretty big cap hit but I would assume maybe something else is brewing or they feel he can regain his form from 2 seasons ago when he was high on the potential charts. Let's not forget he was playing in Tampa, that place has made allot of good hockey players play like garbage lately.

He was "decent" as a second pairing defenceman, or paired with Zdeno Chara. He is not good enough to play as a top pairing D. He has a really good shot, but can't hit the net to save his life, and hits more shin pads than any other D I have seen in a long time. In Philly he will slot in below the top pairing, which may go a long way to protect him from being grossly exposed. If he doesn't have a great D partner, he is the worst defenceman on your team. He makes horrible decisions. People who watched him with the Giants saw a guy who could play physical, but now he just makes the "flyby" type hits that put him way out of position.

It's not that Meszaros is an awful defenseman, it's that he's got an awful contract. If he was making one mil people in Tampa probably wouldn't be saying the things they say about him. However, he'll be making over 5 mil in two seasons and isn't close to being worth it.

Coming to Tampa Bay is like hockey's version of the BP Oil Spill. You don't exactly come out of this organization healthy and clean, and you'll only be back to normal once you've been washed & detoxed
