Leafs Sign Ondrus, Foster, Sifers and Petiot

Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday the hockey club has agreed to terms on one-year contracts with forwards Ben Ondrus (AWN-druhs) and Alex Foster, as well as with defencemen Jaime Sifers (SIH-fuhrs) and Richard Petiot (PEH-tee-awt).

“We look forward to each of these players continuing to improve as prospects,” said Fletcher. “They will provide good depth for our organization this upcoming season.”

Ondrus, 26, played 59 games for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies in 2007-08, collecting a professional career-high 14 goals, along with 12 assists for 26 points. The Marlies’ team captain recorded a plus-21 rating and was named the team’s most valuable player. He helped lead the Marlies to the AHL’s Western Conference Final and also saw action in three games with the Maple Leafs.

Foster, 23, played three games for the Maple Leafs in 2007-08 and made his NHL debut on March 18 at the New York Islanders. He skated in 67 games for the Marlies and scored five shorthanded goals, which ranked first on the team and tied for fourth in the AHL. He also was second on the Marlies in goals (18-tie) and fourth in points (46).

Sifers, 25, was the only player to skate in every game for the Marlies the past two seasons. In 80 games with the Marlies in 2007-08, the hard hitting defenceman registered 13 points on three goals and 10 assists, while registering a plus-14 rating.

Petiot, a 6-4, 210-pound defenceman, played in 40 games for the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs in 2007-08, collecting two goals and five assists for seven points, along with 56 penalty minutes. The 25-year-old native of Daysland, Alberta played the past three seasons with Manchester and saw action in two games with Los Angeles in the 2005-06 season. He was originally the Kings sixth choice, selected 116th overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft.

What the f*ck was the point in acquiring Ryan Hollweg if the Leafs were planning on brining Ben Ondrus back? Ondrus is more physical than Hollweg, is a better player, and is an excellent leader. I hope Ondrus has a chance to take the 4th line spot away from Hollweg at training camp. If he's good enough to captain the Marlies in the AHL, I'm sure he's good enough to hold a 4th line checking role in the NHL.

I'm glad they kept Ondrus, when they signed Hollweg I thought Ondrus was going. Glad they kept in, I really like Ondrus and hope he can make it to the lineup this year.

Or that Ruutu is a pretty good fighter sometimes.

Didn't Ruutu do well against Darcy Tucker too?

Oh yea, that makes Ondrus a wuss eh. That's why he has fought guys like Riley Cote and D.J. King in the minors. Do some research and check out his fight card before you start running your mouth about something you know absolutly nothing about.
